Chambo Dunno at KPHO

Mike Chamberlin is now "On The Beach"

I believe someone hinted a while back on this board that he was on the way out eventually. He'd already been replaced as evening anchor-slash-morning anchor-slash-sports anchor at 5. Would going back to 3 be out of the question?

Tucson on line 1!

I could see that happening, especially since KMSB channel 11 is launching their own newscast soon, instead of having KTVK provide it for them.

I saw both Chamberlin and Gary Cruz on-air at separate times
this past weekend. I also saw--but can't recall where--a job
posting for "sports director" at KPHO-TV. I don't know if this
post is recent or if the position has been vacant since their
previous SD moved to early AM news.

I'm sorry to see him go.
The first time he said "it's time for sports..." at CBS5, brought back fond memories from his days at TV3 and his recaps of sports high/low lites (ala Marv Albert). He had Play of the Day, but his version of week in sports recaps never came back.
Chambo will be ok.

For what it's worth, yesterdays AZ Republic reported that Kevin McCabe's contract with FSNAZ wasn't renewed.
Apparently, his only gig now is at KDUS.

Will he go back to FOX10 or maybe BC Hwy, to replace Chambo?

It's pretty obvious that Belo could give a rat's a$$ regarding Fox 11's (Tucson) new newscast after watching it last night. I wish they would just sell off the station to someone who could dump some money into it to make it look more professional. We sure did like Heather Moore down here, but got something far less now.

Maybe BELO should have sent Heather Moore to Tucson. Of course, she was probably making more money than they pay the new guy!

It sounds like you have a choice down there in Tucson: a newscast taped in Phoenix with a couple of local reporters or a crappy newscast done locally.

Well, if I actually had a choice, it would be neither, but that's Belo. When the taped newscast first started for Fox 11 from Channel 3, it looked pretty good. When they went to HD, I hated the new "set", but still like Heather Moore. She and Norman were the only things I liked about the newscast. I do believe they could've hired better talent with the new local newscast here in Tucson (and a better set), but we didn't have a choice. That decision came from Belo, not Tucson.

Was the decision because KTVK went to an hour-long 9pm newscast? Obviously, it would be difficult to produce 2 newscasts at exactly the same time. Or, was Tucson's newscast always taped at an earlier time?

Chambo and Diana Sullivan have disappeared from KPHO's website. :(

Bad move (IMHO) on the part of Meredith.
I'd wondered how the numbers were when Catherine Anaya and Diana were teamed.
Comments on various discussion groups were always positive.

I worked with her and I'm sure she will be ok.
She is the one of the most down to earth anchors I've had the privilege to work with.

John Hook is another, to place all in perspective.

I had the "pleausre" of checking out the Fox 11 newscast last night, and wow. The first 40 seconds of it had no audio. Then during the lead story about the Democratic Convention the standup at the end of the package from the network reporter was cut mid-sentence. And I thought Fox 10 was bad for the technical gaffes!

The best was the second story of the newscast. It was a remote shot with one of the reporters, but absolutely no mention of where he was. He could have been standing in a field behind the KMSB studios for all I know. The anchor threw it to him with the question "Hillary Clinton won Pima County in the primary, right?" That sloid, hard hitting question was followed by about 10 seconds of blank staring from the field reporter before he finally piped in. His package consisted of a phone interview with a Pima County delegate at the convention in Denver. Thank God they set up a remote for that!

I have literally seen better produced broadcasts from College stations. Why would Belo even waste the money on this garbage?

It's not a matter of wasting money...it's a matter of Belo not INVESTING money. You're right, it was horrible. Granted, the new newscast hasn't been on the air for a full week yet, but d*** Belo for taking away the 9:00 newscast from Phoenix for Tucson, and Heather Moore, just to plant another hour of snooze news for Phoenix. They could've at least hired better talent and a much nicer set to boot. Belo pretty much f***** Tucson, but it's their money to lose, as I won't be tuning in. I'll wait for KWBA's (CW) new newscast in a few months.

Just so you understand what happened in Phoenix, KTVK was tanking (#5) at 10pm. So, they combined their 8pm and 10pm newscasts into a single hourlong newscast at 9pm to try to get higher ratings (they're only going vs. Fox 10 at 9pm). As for Heather and a dozen others, it was a layoff situation to save money.

That being said, I blame Belo for trying to pull off the Tucson newscast without adequate preparation or staffing. Belo owns some very dominate tv stations and certainly knows how to put together a quality newscast (not necessarily at KTVK, but WFAA in Dallas or KING in Seattle have personnel who put together award-winning, top-rated newscasts).

There's the laughable state of tv news in this city (should provide fodder for several chapters). I still can't believe this market is in the top 15. It appears to be a 35-ish market at best. Yes, I know Phoenix has grown tremendously over the past 20 years, but still...

You're actually right, those live remotes with no mention of location are on the grounds of the KMSB/KTTU studios. It's something they've done since well before the newscast moved to Tucson.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Fox 11 newscasts were done live while KTVK had their 8pm and 10pm newscasts, but otherwise were tape-delayed.

Live just to be live. Hey, they did that all the way back in the '80s too. ::)

Mc12 does it, from their roof ("...in central Phoenix, Joe Dana, 12 News").

5 does it from outside their building, overlooking I-17.

Speaking of 5, someone recently mentioned on TV Spy that Kent's been
dipping into the Grecian Formula 16. "Less gray, more suav-e." And not
that I've been looking too closely, but I haven't seen Seeeeeen recently.
