More like Oak Hill, Kyle, and Buda. Fades the minute you get to I-35 and Oltorf, and that's on a good day. I got a KDRP bumper sticker on my laptop, Mr. Dafoe gave me a couple of them.

Translators can relay AM or FM. That also applies to HD Radio and other translators. KDRP-LP originates its own programming and, as Anonymouse mentions, also simulcasts on one of the HD multicast channels of 107.1. I believe the main purpose of getting on one of 107.1's HD subchannels was to more easily get on the translators since they can be fed directly because they're now considered "fill-in" translators.

austin radio is getting younger and younger. after several radio stations died off in this town, i've found myself going back to my cassetee tapes, cd;s, ipod's. internet radio and out of town radio stations we need 1 oldies 1 classic rock 1 classic country station. austin radio good stations never seem to last, what a shame austin is suppose to be a music city.

If you have now 3 radio stations catering to the 'live music' crowd in KGSR, KUTX and now 103.1 how can you say Austin live music culture isn't being represented?

I would also bet that other than KLBJ AM, KUT, KUTX and KNCT - no other radio station even considers the 55+ audience. A mistake? Yes in my opionion, but that's life.

KMFA? Tejano stations? Christian radio?

Radio is dead without new listeners every generation. I wish we had an oldies station -- a good one with deep cuts, b-sides, and full album sides. But we have never had a full-time dedicated indie rock station in the modern era. You have to go back to the early KNNC days for something similar (or early KLBJ when the DJs had free reign in the 70s/early 80s). Even then, this CC incarnation is highly manicured by CC. I wish you guys could listen to the old WOXY in Cincinnati. That was the ideal indie rock station, to my mind. There are others in Seattle and L.A., but nothing compares to WOXY. Le sigh.

I beg to differ on KGSR -- they do not cater to the live music crowd at all. Their format has completely changed since it was on 107.1.

KROX has lost their footing except on Sundays, now. If I hear one more Nirvana track this hour...

I used to joke that Z-102's days were numbered when they started playing Billy Idol.

Well, it is very local in terms of where the personalities are and where the music selection and production elements are made. Maybe "independent" is code for not being owned by Clear Channel.

I would not call Emmis "one of the biggest radio groups in the country" though. They own a total of two stations in the top 20 markets and only 20ish altogether.

They don't cite a source or a date, but the claim is 9th largest in terms of total listeners. Not to split hairs, but I'm still not sure I would call them "one of the biggest" even if that claim is still current and accurate. There is a massive size difference between Clear Channel/Cumulus/CBS and groups like Bonneville or Emmis. Just sticking them in a linear ranking does not tell the whole story.

I feel like the "local" tag is geared more toward content and programming. I think it's fair enough to promote "local", because 101X focuses heavily on local programming and emphasizes local artists. However, disputing the "independent" part of the slogan is certainly fair game.

Currently, Emmis owns one station in Los Angeles and one station in New York City (and one more with an LMA with ESPN) and zero stations in Chicago.

Emmis is basically shell of its former self when they had radio clusters in all of the top three markets, a large international division and a significant local tv operation. That's why I am pretty skeptical they are still in the top 10 in terms of total listeners (but maybe so!).
