Well, we don't know what his contract said regarding being terminated. Sounds like Riter is pretty sure he's a free man though. As far as a non-compete goes at this time there isn't another sports station so WGR is probably safe.
This is not as close to being the same thing, but I'll give an example of an instance of a severance deal (Riter said he didn't get any severance pay after ten years). I worked for a major computer company for a relatively short time and was let go due to "poor economic conditions and restructuring" at the company. They told me in exchange for a two week severance check and my unused vacation time that I would have to sign a document promising not to talk to the press or message boards about why I was let go. If I didn't sign I would get nothing. Perhaps it was the reverse for Riter; no severance and you are free to do what you like.
