Change is coming

Whatever that change is, I just hope it's yet another take on something we already have in this market. You know -- tight playlist, no progression, stuck in the past, really mainstream and predictable, and voice-tracked at least 75% of the day.

How about yet another spin on classic hits/oldies/Jack? We need the same 500 songs, but in a different order. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" and "American Woman" need to be in more places on the dial.

Or how about another variation on AC? Just something "lite" or "soft" to bleed into the background. Nothing challenging or anything like that.

Too sarcastic? Sorry. ;)

By me there are just a handfull of stations, none of them at night on AM (I'm in Schuylkill County).

So WXXX must be in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market, right?
Just trying to narrow down this logic problem. But I think we need another clue of two, Roger. :)

I hope the station is a big-signalled one, though. That's the biggest factor when acclaim is either achieved or rejected. Someone big taking a chance or making a change resounds far more than, say, WGMF 1460 doing the same thing.

I mean, if it's something like exhuming 1320 and putting Standards or traditional C&W on it, no one will notice. (Moreover, the result will be giving these tone-deaf power-ratio people another reason to say, 'See? We said the format's dead.')

My own wish is that they'd put WLSH's oldies on 105.5 , and WMGH's A/C on 1410. WLSH traditionally got the little-sister hand-me-down formats from WMGH anyway. Why not their frequency?

Sounds like somebody decided that doing something live and local/voice tracked doesn't want to pay anything anymore and we'll get a another satellite format coming to town. I expect it to be the station promoting their FINAL event.

According To Roger We have 2 weeks to guess ... My Guess is "The Talker" Is Going Bye-Bye.
Or They Are Letting WARM Go Dark.

730 is dark, yet again...

My guess that it will probably be sold to a different owner and maybe some religious or polka music would move in to this frequency....

Tiger....patience....but you won't have to have too much....our *new* transmitter is literally on a truck or some shipping depot as we speak. We tried to get something low powered that could be done in a hurry on the air, and it didn't last long, sadly. We have been on and off the air with that but frustratingly that unit also keeps blowing fuses.

Please know we're very strongly committed to WNAK er WZMF and know by comments that we've received on email that people regularly depend on this frequency to get Gem 104.

As an owner of 730, my one regret is that the station's funeral home studio and all the related good old radio stuff was gone. I, like most of you, could have probably sat cross legged on a floor in WNAK's back room twisting the pots on an old Gates Yard board for an afternoon or so and looking through old copy, sales contracts, carts, etc. Sadly, all of that stuff was gone by the time I came onto the scene. The transmitter site offered some stuff, but mostly boring components...nothing from which you could have gleaned some of the old story of WNAK over the years. I enjoy the occasional story of WNAK when it pops up on here.

Vince Benedetto, owner of Bold Gold, which owned the station for a very short time when they bought up Route 81's old assets, told me..."on closing day, I have a little surprise for you." When closing day happened in Wilkes-Barre, he gave me a very heavy duty gold/brass colored metal ruler which was given out as a promotional item. I was thankful for that....at least it was something.

I don't know if there is any industry like broadcasting from the standpoint of our nostalgia for it. I wasn't even alive during most of the stories that happened for WNAK, but I do enjoy the history! Do department store people sit and look at old department store stuff? Gas stations? Warehouses? Maybe.....but we have something special here in the world of broadcasting....and the great thing is that it's still alive and strong. Granted, not the same as it was, but people still feel passionately about the product we produce. Because it's people connecting with people. Maybe not the heartthrob nightime DJ spinning vinyl on an AM station, but we help people and are people's companion to this day. It's what you make of it.

I have loved the comments about people missing 730 but the problem is nearly solved. Thanks for all your interest.

PS.....it's not us selling or changing formats or selling.

Driving through the area ten days ago via a trip to the Catskills, I was surprised at how many dead spots there are on the FM dial.

I wasn't DXing or anything, so my scan may have been too casual. But by comparison, in a place like Hazleton, there seems to be an FM signal on every frequency. I realize Hazleton is quite high up there, but S/WB has far more people to serve in their valleys.

Fwiw, 680 Binghamton NY puts a pretty neat signal into Scranton.

* * * * * * *

The S/WB ratings lists like four stations anymore. So if there's a change, my late bookmaker grandfather's genetic instincts (same name as mine, too) says that odds are it's not going to be one of those handful of stations to make the change.

Let's see.
Two weeks to guess.
Mr. Green works in a white house with an FM transmitter ....
Mr. Brown does not live in a corner house but also has a transmitter ....
Ms. White has an old TV aerial mast in her yard, 314 feet above average terrain, which she's renting to phone companies ......

Re: 13 days

Okay Roger, we get it. You heard something. So did a lot of people but they're not all pretending they have the inside track. And don't count on 13 days.

the "dead spots" aren't nearly as dead as they might appear
maybe in the Catskills they are, but here in the valleys of NEPA there really isn't much dead space anymore

A 50,000 watter on the AM dial for WILSCRAHAZE!

Did I win?

::)
