Change That Format...Now! Who needs to do it?

My first pick is WNFN 106-7 The Fan. With a .9 rating right now, why do they hold onto the Sports format?
They need to change it! I wouldn't mind a rhythmic oldies/movin' or oldies format. What other city besides
Nashville has two Sports FMs anyway? Or 3 country FMs? The second one that could use a format change
is the 93.7/94.1 combo. One comes in just a good as the other in town. We don't need two of them. I wish 94.1 would resume as Alternative as Thunder 94.

I don't think you'll see much movement in market 44 for the time being.

My theory on the Fan -- which of course matters nothing to the ownership -- is that it exists as part of a competitive cluster strategy to keep the Zone from having .9 more points in the ratings, and allows sales to tell potential clients they have a sports station too, and theirs features the worldwide leader in sports. Now after a while on the new signal they may come to feel like the spent too much money on raising it for no more ratings than I'd predict they'd get, so, well, a change may happen then.

Yes, both of the Fish's frequencies come in just as well in town, but the two are needed to better reach the greater Nashville area. And besides, Salem's not in business to do Alternative.

I guess The Zone would be .9 higher if it weren't for The Fan. I don't think anyone's changed formats since Oldies 97.1 went classic hits (maybe I'm wrong) but I'm so bored with every station right now..it's just the same old same old day in and day out. Maybe it's time I splurged and got XM or Sirius.

This is sounds like wishful thinking that won't happen anytime soon. Corporate is not listening to any of this.....No sense of reading anymore, I've been up too long.... I'm going back to bed! ;D

106.7 did R&B Oldies in one of there previous formats about 7 or 8 years ago. Since Cumulus did such a bad job with Oldies on 97.1, I don't see them turning their signal on 106.7 to Oldies unless they update the playlist with late '70's, '80's and even early '90's songs.

WVOL should define itself, change to all music or all talk, or remake their image. While I enjoy the music (especially weekend blues) their talk programs are grating most of the time.

I wish 97.1 would STOP interrupting the music to tell us that they are NOT interrupting the music! Would it be too much to hear two songs back-to-back without a mention of Bob and Tom or how "new" the tower is? There needs to be a prohibition on the word "new" in radio. It is so overused that it no longer means anything anymore! Two years since the last format change, and they are still "new"? No, they ain't, and it's getting old!

I know John Heidelburg personally and what he's doing is trying to be a "Community Station", not just for a black audience, but for everyone. A good mix of AC, Hot AC, & Classic R-n-B, with talk. If you go to Memphis and listen to 1070 WDIA, they are doing the same thing WVOL is doing, but John is trying to get more white listeners.

I am a former "WVOL empolyee and jock and one thing that we can NOT do is redefine WVOL. It will always be "The Mighty 147" and will remain a black station in the minds of people in Nashville for years to come. John is doing just fine with WVOL, and WVOL should be left alone the way it is. I stop in and visit John and his son Ron, from time to time and we are good friends. If you have a suggestion for John, drop me a private email and I'll tell him about it.

Forepoint, back in the late-80's one station called itself the "New Y-107" for five years.

Scott, I can understand public perception and Heidelberg's radio for the community vision. The WVOL midday preacher is hail, fire and brimstone. Heidelburg gripes too much about being "done in" years ago by the bankers when trying to buy the newly available 97.1 frequency. Listeners are, for lack of a better term, older clones who chant, "That's right, Reverend," or, "You tell them, John." Then again Heidelburg could bring back the Christian liberal, Green Party guy who was ready to cut off and flame anyone who dared disagree. I think WVOL would better serve as a community presence (sponsorship, simulcast, remote) rather than the call and gripe chatterbox when music is not being played.

Sorry I did not send a private message. I would appreciate any criticism regarding my listening naivety.

Good thing for me I wasn't living here back then! I listened to top 40 radio back in those days, so I definitely would have heard it. I think I listened to them whenever I passed through town.

I have a t-shirt from 104(.5) when they were the Core, and the "new" was even included in their logo! ::) How long can you be "new" before it gets OLD? :p

I wasn't sure if you misspelled my screen name, or if it was a typo, so I corrected it! ;D

I think The New 104.5 The Core went with that name the whole time they were on the air. Of course that's not saying alot, considering they wasn't around but for a couple of years.

I'm kinda surprised that UT never went after those call letters. I could easily see an AM sports station in Knoxville having the call letters WVOL being the flagship station for UT! They would sign on and off with "Rocky Top" and they would bleed orange, and have orange bumper stickers, logos, etc. ;D

There's a thought! Just constantly change your format, then you can always be the "new" something or other! ::)

104.5 played the same music for many years: classic rock or classic hits. They called themselves Fox, Core, Arrow, Groovin' Hits. Music seldom changed, slogan did.

Maybe when the Tower implodes again, they can just call it the new Oldies 97.1 and fail again.
I do hear that Karen Keeley is finally on a format that her beautiful British accent can work
better with. I need to remember to listen it. I suggested a while back that she'd be incredible
on AC. At least Crum gotta a clue and mover her away from the Wolf. I also miss the way
Ashley Webster used to say the word Fox on Fox 17. It would be a real benefit to have
Karen be allowed to work on the NEW Real Rox Radio... Fox 97.1.... gotta dream, right?
