Change That Format...Now! Who needs to do it?

104.5 played the same music for many years: classic rock or classic hits. They called themselves Fox, Core, Arrow, Groovin' Hits. Music seldom changed, slogan did.
BINGO!! That's exactly it, right there! When they had their "name the station" contest, which of course ended up being Core, I thought they should have just gone back to Arrow, since they were back to an Arrow format anyway! ::) The "new" Core is the "old" Arrow! ;D

I figure if Rock 103 in Memphis can revert back to being "Rock 103" after that "Z-103" fiasco in 1985, then Core can go back to Arrow, or back to Fox, or whatever...I'm confused now! :-\ Maybe if they had kept a format for longer than 15 minutes, I wouldn't have "zoned" out on them! ;D

Maybe when the Tower implodes again, they can just call it the new Oldies 97.1 and fail again.
I do hear that Karen Keeley is finally on a format that her beautiful British accent can work
better with. I need to remember to listen it. I suggested a while back that she'd be incredible
on AC. At least Crum gotta a clue and mover her away from the Wolf. I also miss the way
Ashley Webster used to say the word Fox on Fox 17. It would be a real benefit to have
Karen be allowed to work on the NEW Real Rox Radio... Fox 97.1.... gotta dream, right?
Screw that! I want Star 97 back! WITHOUT the "new," 'cause it ain't "new" no more!

However, I agree with you about Karen. But I was not aware that she was not still on the Wolf. I thought she was doing double duty on both stations.

WVOL should define itself, change to all music or all talk, or remake their image. While I enjoy the music (especially weekend blues) their talk programs are grating most of the time.

I know John Heidelburg personally and what he's doing is trying to be a "Community Station", not just for a black audience, but for everyone. A good mix of AC, Hot AC, & Classic R-n-B, with talk. If you go to Memphis and listen to 1070 WDIA, they are doing the same thing WVOL is doing, but John is trying to get more white listeners.

I am a former "WVOL empolyee and jock and one thing that we can NOT do is redefine WVOL. It will always be "The Mighty 147" and will remain a black station in the minds of people in Nashville for years to come. John is doing just fine with WVOL, and WVOL should be left alone the way it is. I stop in and visit John and his son Ron, from time to time and we are good friends. If you have a suggestion for John, drop me a private email and I'll tell him about it.

I'm kinda surprised that UT never went after those call letters. I could easily see an AM sports station in Knoxville having the call letters WVOL being the flagship station for UT! They would sign on and off with "Rocky Top" and they would bleed orange, and have orange bumper stickers, logos, etc. ;D

That will never happen. WVOL has had them call letters since 1958 and black people relate to those calls in this market as being Nashville's Longest Running Black Station. WVOL's fromer calls were WSOK, when the station was down on 4th Ave. Cal Young and Bill Barry put WSOK on in 1951 as a 1000 watt, daytime only operation, when it was sold to R.W. Rounsaville in 1958, he took the station full time and put up those directional towers that still stand today. Back when Skip Sparkman was over WVCP in Gallatin in the early 80's, he tried to get them to release the calls WVOL for VOL STATE. Sam Howard, the owner then, wouldn't do it.

WVOL still maintains it's original transmitter, a 1000 watt, Collins 1T, that uses 833 tubes. It was put on the air in 1951 for WSOK, and retired as a back up whe the RCA 5H was bought in 1958 for the power increase and the move to Brick Church Pk.

Firepoint --- I honestly don't know for sure she's not on The Wolf on weekends. Seems like I read on here things had changed there.
I think she sounds great, but country was just not where I'd place her. I know she has been performing Country-style music for a while.

I just like the way she "would" probably say "Fox." Just making up the station name. Star, done right would be a welcome return. Crums
had moderate success as of late bringing back things in Atlanta. Never know will happen next. Maybe soon enough they'll actually get
something with staying power.
