Changes at 5.4, 23.5 and 35.1

This morning, three local diginet tv stations have changed programming.

Scripps has discontinued TrueReal nationwide. In Cleveland, they have decided to move Defy TV from WVPX 23.5 to WEWS 5.4 (in place of TrueReal). Jewelry TV takes over the 23.5 space.

Weigel has rebranded from Decades to Catchy Comedy. Locally WOCV 35.1 is the home to the rebrand and all the classic sitcoms.

Surprised to see Defy and True Real/Jewelry TV swap stations. I didn't think that would happen as Jewelry would prevent Scripps/Inyo from reshuffling networks across their stations if the subchannels for True Real were simply deactivated.

It surprised me as well. I thought it would be a possibility because of the better signal in Cleveland for WEWS. As far as the other diginets on WVPX, it may be a case of you don't miss what you can't see in the first place.

Maybe the shopping channels do better down in the general Akron area where the WVPX signal is stronger.

It would be nice if WEWS dropped HSN & QVC and moved Scripps News and something else from WVPX, but I don't see that happening.

Also note that since 2019, 5.4 has been Court TV, True Real, and now Defy. Thankfully Grit & Laff have remained on WEWS with all this shuffling between WVPX/WDLI.

But then Cleveland viewers along Lake Erie may have trouble receiving Jewelry TV, like that will be a problem.
As I said, it's hard to say where those channels do better. In the urban areas, you have more physical shopping choices. But channels like Jewelry TV are probably on cable anyway so the weak signal is a non issue.

Need a scorecard to keep up with all the changes.

Are there still any duplicated diginets in Cleveland/Akron now, other than the shopping channels?

Even though JTV is the direct replacement for True Real, the one thing we forgot to consider is this:

Although WVPX and WDLI are "technically" owned by Inyo ;), they are really run by Scripps (who...let's be honest...stashed some of their Ion stations in the shell company that is Inyo so they would be under the FCC limit).

So for all intents and purposes, Scripps has a triad of stations in the CLE/AKR/CAN market (5, 17, 23), where they can mix and match subchannels any old way they se fit.

So sliding Defy over to 5.4 and putting JTV to 23.5 was within their rights to do.

I'm sure it has better things to do. But I almost wish the FCC would freeze these channels and let them settle in for a while. Defy and Trureal were a pretty good example of signing on too much of one like thing at the same time. (Assuming you like that type of T.V. --- I don't)

Since WUAB found infomercials more profitable than the "The Big Bad B-Movie Show". I wish it could find a home elsewhere (Say - WOCV which could use some local flavor). I pretty sure one of the actors (Leopold) worked for WUAB, plus the nostalgia footage was usually of WUAB...So that's a moot point. (Just needed to vent the cancellation though. )

Ion Mystery is doubled down on WVPX 23.4 and WQHS 61.4

61.4 had it first when the Scripps owned network was known as Escape, and this was prior to Scripps buying ION and all its sister networks and O&O stations.

Once Scripps bought the ION O&Os (and stashed a few under the Inyo shell), they moved Escape (then renamed Court TV Mystery, and later to its current Ion Mystery name) to stations under it's umbrella.

Ion Mystery on 61.4 is pretty much a relic of the pre Scripps/Ion era, and I would imagine once the contract with WQHS expires, it won't be renewed, and that will eliminate the duplication.

Big Bad's goose may have been cooked when CW expanded to Saturday nights, pushing it down to the 11p slot (remember it had been airing 8-10p when it debuted)

I felt it should have worked better at the later hour, as Svengoolie could also have made a good lead in. (Switch from 19.2 to 43.1 with a news break in between). Overall, I think it became a ship without a port as WUAB gave up on it for in it's opinion? More important fare. A two hour "Fan Duel" infomercial took it's place the first Saturday. Early February, and much later than anticipated as I think it was supposed to have the plug pulled in late summer/early fall (per these boards).

Also, I wonder if it was up to "Big Bad" to find it's own sponsors and do it's own promoting towards the end. I think that's becoming more common for locally produced shows.

My guess is that Scripps didn't want a shopping channel as part of the ABC main/subchannel lineup. I'm sure they see a shopping subchannel as devaluing a network station.

And the idea of having the FCC "freeze" switching and or dropping subchannels is simply silly and out of the jurisdiction of the FCC. I'll take Canada's national healthcare system but not their regulation and approval of radio and TV station formats.

Home Shopping is on 5-5 and QVC on 5-6 so those types of channels are already there and have been there for a long time.

Well, remember the Fan Duel thing was right before the Super Bowl, and this was Ohio's first crack at - legally - betting on it, So FD (and all the other sports books) were buying all kinds of time on all the stations in town.

And then channel 43 just decided to stick with the infomercials going forward.

Big Bad had already aired their last new episode over the holidays, and were just gonna air reruns anyway until fall.

Bring back Superhost! He did everything at WUAB except scrub the toilets.
