Changes at 92.1 and 94.3

I barfed when I read "and arguably the most successful." I wish Otis would actually research and report than simply regurgitate whatever is told to him in a press release. But then again, that is why The State continues to sink.

It's not well done, but at least it's something about commercial radio.
Take what you can get.
Usually, if it aint NPR or WUSC or some singer/songwriter/lute player that no ones ever heard of - Otis aint interested

If I were a competitor, I would use Otis' article to show the ridiculous turmoil and turnover of these signals. I mean, they are moving their "new" morning show from 92.1 to 94.3 to become their "new" morning show. That "new" morning show is the oldest in the market at a time they are claiming to go younger with their country music mix. Wow.

The music isn't bad. The biggest issue I have with it is the imaging. The old guy singing "Palm 92.1" sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me. In fact I'd rather hear nails on a chalkboard than that.

Well, they seemed to have stopped using the old guy singing between every other song. It was grating my nerves also.

I listened to The Palm and although it is different for me I still like the feel of WXRY a lot better. Some of the music on The Palm I did not think fit well, but that is just me, but atleast it is something different and a lot of us on here have said for many years Columbia needs something different so it will be interesting to see how things play out. The idea of one person "hand-picking" music harkens back to another era in radio and that's not neccessarily a bad thing. However, that person has to have 1) impeccable taste in music-and that itself is highly subjective! 2) knowledge of a wide variety of music 3) an idea of what will work. Personally for me, it's not very interesting. I was deeply disappointed in the first 45 minutes. Hence, I have not listened much.

I think I've figured Good Morning Columbia out. It's kind of like a hybrid of John Tesh and Readers Digest for the AARP crowd. Fair assessment?

Pretty funny and on-target. The little bit I heard this morning sounded like they (Good Morning Columbia) have been instructed to be more music intensive and talk only around the stop sets.

Who would you rather hear, Tim Miller's rantings and obvious delusional self importance or Good Morning Columbia?

I for one would rather hear nails down a chalkboard then Tim Miller's bumbling ramblings and "dramatic long pauses"

Here's an interesting question...with Carolina 92.1 out of the picture, which station benefits most from the (obviously few) displaced listeners? WOMG or WTCB? At first, I think WTCB since it's "softer", but then WOMG because it's older...but neither probably appeal to the 65+ crowd...

I think WOMG would benefit the most-albeit only slightly and maybe not even enough to register-because Carolina 92.1 did occasionally play a 60's or 70's "Oldie."

All reading this, please post your opinions:
Is it a sound business decision to waste Bill Benton's talent by diluting him by 80% with music? Which policy would lose more listeners: a) curtail the music to 20% from 6 to 9 a.m.? or curtail Bill, Doug, and Charlie to 20%? 94.3 chose the latter. That will drive many listeners away to WIS' Woody Windham, a pure talk wake-up show by another legendary host.

If 94.3 is going to even halfway comptete with WCOS and the Mroning Rush, then they are going to have to tailor themselves more to music than talk. Personally I feel that all talk gets boring and this show has been around Columbia radio long enough that maybe it's time to put it to bed. Out of the three Charlie, Bill and Doug; Doug is the one with the most music and music announcing talent. I listened to him as a kid competing with the Wyndham Brothers on 1230 WNOK and have followed him to just about every other station he has been to and that was country to oldies.
Like I have stated in previous comments, let Charlie sell, Bill retire and Doug do his thing.

I am told that when Charlie left Cumulus, he had a year non-compete in the sales area to sit out. So he cannot sell for anyone in Columbia until a full year passes from the time of his resignation.
