Changes at CBS 5/3 TV - What We Know So Far

Posted on Chris Dunn's FB page:

It's been a great 6-year run, but as of Friday July 31, I am no longer on the air at KPHO-TV CBS 5. The station recently acquired KTVK 3-TV and with the consolidation many changes are being made...including me. Not sure what the future holds, or where I will end up, but I thank you for your viewership and encourage you to continue to follow me along for the adventure, wherever it may be!

In some areas of the country, the idea of having weather presenters instead of meteorologists makes a lot of sense. In others...it doesn't. Our expectations of an actual meteorologist doing the weather tend to be country specific.

Raymie, I totally agree with you. Honestly, Phoenix doesn't have enough real "forecastable" weather. The monsoon storms appear to defy prior forecasting, except to say that conditions are "favorable" for the development of severe storms.

So, my expectation of the weather anchor are not nearly as high as they were when I lived in Texas.

Are They Trying To Work Adam Longo to death?

Despite the fact that he is starting on Monday on Wake Up Arizona, Adam Longo is anchoring the news tonight. Based on last Sunday night, I am assuming that Lina De Florias will take over as weekend anchor at CBS 5 at least temporarily. However, Lina spend the week subbing for Heather on 3TV. So, I guess they are running thin on anchors right now (although Jason Berry is certainly capable).

When will KPHO/KTVK be under one roof? I know it's only about a 10 minute drive from one station to another (according to Google Maps). Channel 3 and Channel 5 could take this opportunity and perhaps take note of KCBS/KCAL in Los Angeles? But how much news could both stations report throughout the day? I've never really understood stations that have a 3pm or 4pm newscast then go late into the evening... but then again, with different work schedules I suppose one could catch up on the day's news if they haven't read it online. Just my two cents.

I believe they both operate from KTVK. I drove by KTVK studio last week and the signage had both 3TV and CBS5. Also Paul Horton posted a picture on Facebook which showed most of the equipment removed from KPHO's TV set.

If you go to the KPHO Facebook page there are two very hot topics being discussed by the followers. The first is the roundup of wild horses near the Salt River. The other hot topic is the new morning show, "Wake Up Arizona" There were about twenty posts when I looked before and all but one of them was a dislike of the new show, in particular, many people disliked Yetta and thought she was self centered and did not speak well (stumbled over words).
Adam Longo replied on behalf of KPHO on some of the early posts and then the response was from Leona Wood/Executive Director of News. She welcomed their input and gave out not only her email but that of General Manager Ed Munson if they wished to expand on their opinion.

Wake Up Arizona was very fluffy and centered around Yetta. However, I didn't particularly notice her stumbling or mumbling. I thought it was ironic that 5 went to a "GMAZ-lite" format, since it leads in to CBS This Morning, which advertizes itself as very newsy (i.e. "The News IS Back in the Morning).

I didn't see a hot topics section on CBS5 webpage. Were the comments taken down?

I watched it this morning and found it to be quite lackluster. I didn't really care for Yetta sitting there by herself (as if she's the star) with Adam seemingly catering to her. I thought they would both be sitting side-by-side at the main desk and maybe they eventually did, but I missed it. The show seemed a bit forced (meaning Adam looked like he was being forced into it), but I have to say that I really enjoy Katie Baker and she just seems so upbeat (she could be an anchor). Heidi Goitia seemed pretty pleasant too.

Katie replaced Nicole on the 5 noon news and is doing a great job. Not that Nicole didn't however. The new weather girl and Katie yuk it up a bit too much for me though. Nicole and Paul Horton had about the right level of enthusiasm for me.

Yetta clearly appears to be the focus of this show. They are apparently trying this new format, since the old one didn't garner good ratings. I see it as sort of a "GMAZ-lite" format. I'm still wondering why they don't just simulcast GMAZ, rather than spend the effort to create a totally new show.

I happen to like Yetta in the mornings and am glad to see her back. I do think they should bring Katie back in the studio. She would be better in studio that reporting live for no apparent reason.

Is 3TV going with solo anchors now? From what I saw yesterday, Nicole Crites was by herself early and Brandon Lee was by himself late. Didn't see the whole newscast though. No idea what happened with Heather Moore.

The "hot topics" I spoke of are posts from followers of KPHO on their Facebook page. Look down the left hand side you will see PHOTOS, VIDEOS and finally POSTS TO PAGE. That's where the comments are.

Thanks. I should've said KPHO's Facebook page, not website. At first, I didn't see any posts regarding the new morning show, only the 100+ messages on saving the Salt River horses. I liked their Facebook page and started seeing the comments.

Nevermind. Heather was back on tonight and mentioned returning from her vacation on her twitter feed.

CBS 5 has already located to the 3TV building already. The old CBS 5 building on I-17 & Indian School is already emptied and has been sold.

The week that was. At least according to Facebook, it's been an overwhelming negative response to Wake Up Arizona. I watched some, not a lot, of CBS5 during the week. I thought it was okay. The single person high top desk is different. The team's chemistry is okay. I think Katie should've started in studio for the first month or so just to establish the group. Yetta is good but having the focus on her so much might be bringing down the program. Seems that Adam and Heidi aren't used properly. I wouldn't be surprised if the concept is scrapped after November sweeps.
