Changes at CMG Winston-Salem

Announced to sales people this morning. Mike Carbone is in charge of sales on an interim basis.

From the people I knew at WSJS it was either you were with Tom or weren't with Tom...There must be a lot of scared people in that building today

Scared, yes, but I'm certain there are also people who are incredibly relieved! Wonder if it had anything to do with the
DUI Tom got a while back? I wondered that there had not been any repercussions from that.

Sadly, WSJS is a mere shadow of its former self. The only way back to prominence is a strong show from 12N - 3PM. Rush is vulnerable to a well produced, regional talk show that deals with issues that are crucial to North Carolina. The next 18-months, in particular. Republicans control the state house and senate, and have a real shot at the Governor's mansion. The right team (host, maybe hosts) and producer) could kick Rush's ass - and if it were simulcast on WPTF, it could make a major impact on the future of North Carolina and both of those radio stations!

Don't look for that to take place anytime soon, if WSJS and WPTF are going to survive, they need a FM signal, or else they both should go silent, look at how far there ratings have tumbled since both of them lost Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

The more likely thing to happen is to simulcast WZTK on AM 600, ZTK is battling with WPTI as the #1 talk station and in the Triad and to be qutie honest, Brad & Britt while annoying and smarmy at times are interesting to listen to. They're an interesting morning show to listen to and that signal is just amazing.

WSJS has just fallen way behind the times. What they need to do is just scrap WSJS, EXCEPT for their news staff. Ed Skurka, Smith Patterson are tremendous news anchors and are both (last time I checked) still employed there. Put ZTK on the AM and have a killer news team with voices people know. That would be the smart thing to do in my estimation.

No way Curtis is putting WSJS's horrific midday/afternoon lineup on an FM translator.

SJS did just fine on AM as long as the programming was interesting and compelling. Losing Rush was just the straw that broke the camel's back. The demise has been in progress ever since TH started selling time to "experts" with NO consideration for what the listener base might be there for a subject!

I agree with Mike----at one time there were a couple of "pay for play" programs. But THEY WERE ACTUALLY interesting and engaging. As the years went by, they started adding shows just as long as someone plopped the money on the table--most of them had no business being on the radio. WSJS made a ton of money---and not that many years ago, however, I think the air has leaked out of this balloon.

I agree with HGR and Mike about the pay for play stuff. I saw how detrimental those were going to be to the station, years ago! Shouldn't take a genius to figure that out. I also agree that FM Talk 101.1 is an excellent station. Everyone I know listens to Brad & Britt and it is frequent water cooler conversation where I work. In my opinion WZTK tromps Rush radio which I can only describe as insipid.

Whitley left ZTK about six months ago. His choice, I understand.

The few successful paid programs were all ones who started doing it long before there were any dollars involved. Mike Wells, Larry Hungerford (Woodard & Company), Gib & John, early Computer Talk (Steve and Stephen, Deb & Gary), The Super Handyman (David Dalrymple) to name the most notable.

In those days, we invited those people to be true guest experts. They weren't paid, they didn't pay. Later, people like Mike Wells and Woodard & Company, Gib & John were all asked to buy a certain level of advertising to sustain their on-air presence.

More recently, the pay-for-play folks have been either mostly infomercial or so highly targeted they had little, if any, appeal to a general audience.

Frankly, I have always wondered how they got away without some sort of "paid program" disclaimer in recent years.

Re: "WZTK tromps Rush Radio"..........I really wouldnt know since I can't get 94.5 at my house or in my car. Inexplicably, I CAN pick up 106.1 out of Raleigh on a cloudy day. Is the greensboro affiliate having transmitter issues (such as an unwillingness by CC to upgrade their transmitter, which seems extremely likely)

WPTI has a directional signal to protect Raleigh's WQDR, that causes signal deficiencies in the southeastern portions of the market.

Southeastern portions of the market? So Rush Radio doesn't make it into Siler City? O noes!!!1111

People complain way too much about that signal. I've never had issues with it driving through the Triad. I usually switch from 106.1 to 94.5 around Burlington. It's much better than a 5kw low def AM.

I've always had toruble with 94.5 when I drive through Burlington. Even on the western side of town

Thought Tom Hamilton as a ficture at WSJS. Guess the CMG has made a number of changes and so far it appears they have not been for the betterment of the company. I understand they refused to pay the fees for Rush in GSO and also in Raleigh and we know how that has worked out for them. Guess Phil felt he knew more than the audience and they were a ficture in the individual markets. Guess again Phil! Change is good but many of the changes made at WSJS were not for the good of the company. Just listen to Bob Campbell in the afternoons!

nuffsaid, nobody EVER refuses to pay fees for Rush

That was Clear Channel yanking Rush away from WSJS. They didn't renegotiate a deal with Curtis both in Raleigh and Winston Salem. Same thing with Hannity.

I actually thought it was cool they brought in Bob Campbell, hes talented but he's not meant for NewsTalk.

I actually just tuned in the other day and heard him doing news he sounds AWFUL. Hes a rock DJ, not a newsman. Its just like Bill Flynn at WPTI...different circumstances but similar in fact that the two have no business doing NewsTalk.
