Changes at Fresh 102.7?

Since their call is WNEW, "New" seems to be a better name for the station than "Fresh." They will apparently try to get some offices to switch from Lite,
with commercial free hours between 9-5 on workdays. Jeffrey Jameson from the morning show has left. Apparently Cane is now the morning host on Alt 92.3. It is unclear whether any of the other personalities will be retained.
The playlist, which has few if any songs that are more than 10 years old, sounds the same as it has been. Does anyone know whether it has been tweaked in some way?

According to AllAccess, the format remains Hot AC. Just a change in branding & imaging:

“This is an exciting move that underscores our commitment to offer listeners in NEW YORK a top rated content and music experience,” said Regional Pres./Market Manager SUSAN LARKIN. “Feedback tells us that New Yorkers are looking for a Hot AC station that can take them through their workday, and we know NEW 102.7 will deliver.”

Here is the launch video, along with a compilation of most of the sweepers on the All “New 102.7”.

Some sweepers are complete jabs at Lite. I don’t get why though. Desperation? This station likely won’t do well…

When I first read that it was going to be "New 102.7" I thought of a tired cookie cutter name that will be outdated really fast. In Boston, they have "The New 97.7". But, where Boston would benefit from a different name to the format, as the station isn't so "new" anymore, and the format plays older R&B hits, WNEW does make sense to me. With the station playing Hot AC, being from New York, and using the legacy calls of WNEW, the name now has a good ambiguous meaning that suits the station well, and can for a long time so long as it that criteria remains in tact.

Us from evil?

Yep, just like FedEx.

I listened to 102.7 a few times today and it seems that they've removed all rock music from the playlist, to avoid any possible crossover with Alt 92.3.

Stations don't protect within a cluster to the extent you are thinking. A percentage of rock leaning songs on an AC will not affect the listening to an alternative rock station. I've seen (and programmed) stations with as much as 50% title by title overlap, with no evidence of any cannibalism on either side.

But right before the switch, 102.7 was playing a lot of alternative hits that crossed over to the pop charts: AJR, Coldplay, Foster The People, Imagine Dragons, John Mayer, Portugal The Man, Chainsmokers, Revivalists, Twenty-One Pilots, Walk The Moon, Weezer, etc... I doubt we will be hearing many of these now on "New 102.7".

Short time I tuned in today heard Elle King followed by Weezer. Elle King topped the Alternative charts at one time. Africa by Weezer another Alternative band with a song that is not be heard on 92.3. No doubt some softer rock and Alt songs will likely still be played on one and not the other. Sounds like 102.7 more appealing to women and 92.3 appealing slightly more to men.

If you don't hear them, it's not to "protect" Alt... it is to go more directly at WLTW.

Based on the music and the promos and even the website, they are going after the approximately 7 shares that WLTW has. If they can keep their mid-2 share and add two more shares, they will be in the top 5 to 6 stations in the market, and likely top 5 in 25-54.

If WLTW is not playing the songs you mention, likely WNEW will not play them either. Portugal the Man, Imagine Dragons, Chainsmokers, Coldplay are all among the currents and recurrents on WLTW so it means that those particular songs by those artists are mainstream now, and no longer niched as Alt only.

I'm curious what the demo's breakdown for WNEW versus WPLJ are.

Since, for all practical purposes, WNEW has a new format (or at least a significant repositioning of the old one) comparisons are not particularly valid as they would be based on 60 to 90 day old data.

In June, and, in fact, for most of this year, WPLJ and WNEW have been statistically tied in 25-54... at around 14th.

They played Lifehouse-Hanging by A Moment which was played on alternative rock stations.

I feel like there is a clock for when to play certain songs. Yesterday at 11:36pm WNEW played Haley Steinfeld's "Let Me Go". At 11:17pm, and they're playing it. 11:58pm last night they played Zedd's "The Middle". Its 11:31pm now, and they're playing it again. Not to mention the 6 Gaga songs a day, played in the same hours yesterday and today. My ears definitely didn't deceive me. I am likely missing other songs. PS playing Taylor Swift's "Delicate" nearly double-digits is approaching Top 40 territory, not variety.

Most of us do not overly protect horizontal rotation times from Sunday to Monday. In any case, they have modified the format and likely are using a different database today from what they used yesterday.
