Changes at Hot 99.5 WXNR

The overlap is why I say the two don't make sense as a simulcast. WMGV 103.3 covers everything that 99.5's lesser signal covers and then some, even with the 97.5 translator in Jacksonville. (It might have worked 20 years ago when 103.3's signal came from Open Grounds Farm out in far eastern Carteret County, but their current Pamlico County location covers the market adequately). It's just very interesting that the call signs WMGV and WMJV are only one letter in difference, as has been some in simulcasts--both CMG and otherwise--in the past.

That was more like 30 years ago. V103.3 is closing in on 30 years on the air.

I’m wondering if it’s going to be a complementary format for WMGV, like a soft AC.

They will be cannibalizing sister station V 103.3, unless changes are coming to that signal, as radioinsight.com seems to hint. Maybe V goes a more general AC as it covers some areas better than 107.9 WNCT.

What areas? I remember hearing WNCT in Myrtle Beach before there was The Gator. And it certainly had a good signal in Raleigh.

Being able to hear a station outside its market does not mean it has a better signal...

The only thing important to a station is being able to be heard inside buildings within its home market.

But when the signal is that strong, it seems the chances are good it will be.

WNCT along with WERO and WRNS have the best signals in the market period. Full class C's near the top of inland TV towers that don't waste a lot of signal over the ocean.

WNCT does have an excellent signal, though WMGV's looks a bit more robust in Morehead City , Atlantic Beach, and central Carteret. In Jacksonville/Onslow, it's basically a draw between the two signals. Neither are the population center of the market, though. Regardless, I can't see the logic in two Hot AC formats under the same roof, and I wonder the 'end game'

Yeah I wonder that myself too.
