Changes at KLBJ-FM?

What's going on there? Dudley and Bob were talking about having to take paycuts if they wanted to stay and hinting at some other changes.

The new home for Oldies?

I thought it would be 98.1 KVET-FM.

Wishful thinking.

Well if they did, they would flip KROX to Active Rock (which could be, because you know the 86'd Hypersonic) and flip Classic Rock/Rock KLBJ to Classic Hits.

I don't think they would touch KGSR since it has been improving but with KUTX becoming AAA, and KGSR still has AAA lean to it.

Plus Emmis used to have an Oldies station on 103.5

Would be a good move to protect KBPA Bob 103.5 in the Emmis cluster.

Isn't morning shows the first to be axed before a station's format changes? Take San Antonio's KTFM 102.7 Drex was axed a couple of weeks before the flip to K-Rock. Drex did mornings.

If getting a job offer in market #3 for a boatload of money was ever considered being axed.... chop me up!!!

Seriously though, Drex was never fired. He had Chicago calling him, bought up his contract, and he was off. There was no way KTFM would have ever fired him.

Joey Dee was doing mornings at the time of the death of 102.7 KTFM, and he was let go at the same time as the rest of the staff.

KGSR is still behind KLBJ-FM in the PPMs. And it will probably take a hit when KUTX comes on line.

Charlie Hodge, formerly on the KLBJ-FM Dudley And Bob Morning Show, then he had his own show following that show, has completed his one year non-compete. This was on his site:

I am off and running at 104.9 and it feels great to be back on the air waves of Austin, Tx. All my new co-workers are great guys and I look forward to a lot of good times. Tune in at 2pm to catch me on “The Game” w/ Chad Hastings, JD Lewis, Beau and producer Nick. Then from 3pm – 6pm I am on “The Big Show” w/ Erin Hogan, Sean Adams and producer Tyler.

Sorry I got the names confused I meant to say Joey Dee. Drex did go to Chicago. Didn't they do a replay of Drex's morning shows before the flip during the final days?

I remember he was talking about going to Tampa, and how he would hate it. I recall he called Tampa, Florida "Tampon Florida" due to it's humidity.

Back then I was traveling back in forth between Houston and San Antonio a lot so memory fades me some. I do recall my radio was on 106.7 the most, followed by 102.7, and then 96.1.

This is additional information about Charlie Hodge. He did not mention this in the part that I copied and pasted from his website in my post above but I'm pretty sure that I heard on the radio that he will only be on the air Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. That is what I think I heard when they were discussing it on the radio.

Dale Dudley tweeted this today so I guess we will know by Thursday whether Bob Fonseca accepted the paycut and signed a new contract:

Dale Dudley‏@DaleDudley

Hmm @BobFonseca contract runs out officially on Wednesday. Finally welcome to the Dale Dudley show everybody! 93.7FM and @tunein

So the question is, knowing how tight the market currently is for on-air personalities (and IMHO it's only going to get worse) would you accept a pay cut to stay in the industry?

This is only from memory from listening to the show so I don't know how accurate it is but I think two contracts ago Dudley and Bob signed that contract for the same amount as the previous contract, so no pay raise or pay cut. I think one contract ago they said that they took a 10% pay cut. They have been calling the current proposed contract a "substantial drop". I think Dale mentioned it would be a 12% pay cut. Again, I want to emphasize that this is only from memory and I don't know if they were giving the actual figures.

Dale Dudley tweeted this today:

Dale Dudley‏@DaleDudley

Becoming optimistic in negotiations. Wanna be a team player. Innovation coming. You fans can be part of changing an industry. #gonnaneedya

If anyone is still interested, here is the latest:

Bob Fonseca and Dale Dudley have a "handshake agreement" (verbal) with management that has not been put to paper. The contract will be for two years with an option for a third year and their pay cut will be "slight" (so less than the original proposal).

They still plan some type of "innovation" for next year. It sounds like it might be more time (maybe an extra hour) of an uncensored podcast for some membership fee. This is only speculation from what Dale was saying and it probably is only now being worked on.

They had a guest on the program that has a new website:

http://heyride.com/

which is sort of like a taxi site for people to match a rider with someone with a car for transportation for a fee.

They suggested a "celebrity ride" category and they asked Dale who he would want to ride with.

Dale said that he would pay for a ride from Fred Cantu for his celebrity ride. (That was today so it should be on the podcast on their site.)

I have heard the numbers 12%, 14% and 16% kicked around for the amount that management proposed cutting Dale and Bob's pay for the new contract.

This was on Dale's twitter page today:

Rhett Cervelli‏@RhettCervelli
@daledudley congrats on the contract ext, thanks for taking one for the team, 16%, looking forward to 2013 ideas, hope you feel better bro.

Dale Dudley‏@DaleDudley
@RhettCervelli LOL we've got em down to about 5% now. Thanks man.

I don't know if this is of any interest to anyone but the subject for this thread is "Changes at KLBJ-FM" so I'll include this one:

Today Dale Dudley said that Chase Rupe, the Program Director for KLBJ-FM, is moving over to KGSR. They are both owned by Emmis and are in the same building.

After the KLBJ-FM Morning Show [Dale Dudley, Bob Fonseca, and Matt Bearden] contract expired, they met with management and made an oral agreement to continue without a contract until a written contract could be drawn up. Last week they received the written contract and were not happy with it. Dale said it was not what they had agreed to and they do not want the non-compete clause and the part about the company owning the podcast content. This was an important point for them because they are working on some type of uncensored podcast (probably a paid service by listeners of content that was not discussed on the air).

They thought that they were going to continue this show for two more years with a new contract but now Dale said that he will not sign this contract so they are still working without a contract.

Today they were interviewing a movie director or producer and he said the "F" word during the show. They were on a remote so they did not have the delay ready that they would have in the studio. Will there be any repercussions from this? Dale thinks that the "new" FCC allows an inadvertent comment that comes from someone not employed by the station.

Dale also said the "new" show will be announced in April. It will be some type of podcast where they can say what they want (like the comment above) because it will be an "addition" to the radio show but it will not be on the air.

There shouldn't be, but I'm not sure if there's been a court decision saying "yes" or "no" to it. The so-called "fleeting expletive" is technically legal, though the Bush FCC tried to crack down on it. There really are no such things as "forbidden words." The FCC has only forbidden contexts in its rules.

I get so tired of the same worn out old list of about 24 words used to express strong disapproval. With over a million words currently in the English language, you would think people could communicate much more effectively without resorting to the same old list. Are they really so unintelligent? I am certainly capable of expressing disapproval to somebody with a much broader range of words - they may not be profanity to most people, but believe me the person I am talking to will know they have been disapproved of!

Agreed....it is a tragedy that we are so lazy with our language when we have a whole realm of good old Anglo-Saxon insults from which to choose!
