Changes at WQKS 96.1?

I know this. When a station changes it format you always have a group of people who are disgruntled. You also have a new group of people who are ecstatic. If the format shift is drastic, easy listening to hard rock, the size of the aforementioned groups are larger. With Alice & Q there was a shift, but not a drastic shift.
Based on the number of positive emails I've recieved, and the relative few I've seen that didn't like the change, I think the station has made a move in the right direction. Even at your best at any station you always find someone who is discontented. Overall the disgruntled few are like a sparrow fart in a hurricane, too small to notice or cause worry.

Wow - never been compared to a sparrow fart before. :D

And I wasn't trying to come across as bitter - just sad that I lost my favorite station. Seems to happen every couple of years. I loved Y102 growing up, then they turned to Cat Country 102. I came back when they switched to Y102 again, and when they started emphasizing Hip Hop and Rap over Rock, I switched to the Fox.

Anywho, I'm glad I'm of no concern. My Ipod has been missing me anyways.

Don't take it personally, my comments don't have anything to do with you or any listener... I'm just saying that people will be angry & people will be happy with any format change. You make the change, you move forward. You can't please all the people all the time.

My apology if you took it the wrong way. I have no idea if you are a sparrow fart.

;D

Okay, now see, that's just gross... ::) :p

Thanks to Skipper & Rick for taking the time out to respond about the changes...I think I was just "born out of my time", so to speak...I agree with DSZ, though. Even though there are "Alice" songs on this new station, there are still enough songs I don't like, to justify going somewhere else. Sorry guys, but I admit I'm an odd duck in these parts, so it's going to be hard to please me 100% of the time anyway. :p

On behalf of all the sparrow farts to whom I am distantly related ... this email is as a listener.

I grew up in the '70s and '80s. So, when I hear a song like "Magic," by Olivia Newton-John (from the film Xanadu, just released on special edition DVD!!), or "Rubber Band Man," by The Spinners, it takes my ears back to a time when top 40 radio was fair game for AC, rock, disco, soul, funk, country, show tunes, whatever. If you read the Holy Book of Whitburn, the early 1990s were the last years of rock-oriented top 40 songs .. it became more R&B and hip-hop oriented, and that's when I became more of a 95.1 The Fox-type listener than a Y102-type listener.

The best thing about The Q is that you'll hear tunes like those, as well as the AM Gold-style oldies of the Supremes or The Beatles, alongside the best of what Alice was. Like some of you stated, Alice was programmed in every car and on every radio in the house .. especially on weekends, when we were cleaning and working indoors and out, Alice was the soundtrack, and it was great.

Now with Q96, we can hear all of the rock we loved on Alice, but add in the Al Green/Aretha Franklin sounds and the '70s and '80s pop that we all love.

Alice seemed like it was for people who thought they might be cool enough to be 'in the know' on some classic album cuts and a few current records from active rock stations. I was one of those people who thought Alice was cool, and I sure do miss it!

To just totally turn off The Q ... well, it's just too early, in my listening opinion. The personalities of the Q are even better than some of the music that you may not like so much. It sounds fun, and the presentation of that station is reminiscent of the glory days of Montgomery radio.

So why not give Q96 more of a chance? It's a refreshing change of pace and something the market has been desperately needing for years.

This ain't yer grandmother's oldies station.

I know a lot of people are happy with the inclusion of the 60's songs and the excising of the 90's and today, but I'm not. I'm 27 - while I like a lot of the stuff from the 60's, I don't like enough to want them over the songs from High school or college. I admit it is an age thing, but like you I want the songs I grew up with, as well as getting some new music occasionally.

I miss the 80's Fridays. That was the highlight of my weekly car ride to visit family. WTLS 1300/106.5 has a really good 80's show but they're doing THS Football in the Fall.

Thanks. I'll have to check them out sometime. :)

MBird, I'm a child of the 70's and 80's as well, but my Dad had the radio cranked in the car all the time, so I got to hear a lot of 60's music as well. Alice, to me, was as "perfect" a radio station as you could find, here in Montgomery, because it DID have a wide range. Now I will say that because there are several "Alice" songs on the new station, and most of the DJ's are the same, it took a couple of weeks for us to realize the format HAD changed. I think it was after the fourth or fifth time of saying "what the heck is this?" and changing stations. :p

I'm not going to totally write off the new 96.1 JUST yet, but I have to say, I don't think even my parents would have sat through some of the stuff I have heard... :p Though this morning's choices were pretty good, I think...And contrary to popular belief, there _were_ actually a few good songs in the 90's, ya know...now, recent music is another matter... :p
