Changes coming to 93.1 & 95.7 ?

93.1 went alternative a couple years ago. After the format switched back to active rock, one of the DJs joked about playing rock again, they jokingly said "and here is Coldplay." Now they are going back, again.
I also heard Vanetti this morning say a big change is happening at 10 am tomorrow. I hope not, but I have a feeling it will combine the current fox with harder classics rock. I am hoping that they will take more of a classic hits format with current rock mixed in. They just added some classic hits (INXS, Modern English, FIXX, etc) and they have a female now saying the station ID.
I wonder how many people will be fired?

I have never had a job in radio, just a listener, but I imagine the meeting which Toni TNT as he announces to everyone at WQMF what the change will be. "I have a brilliant idea! We are going to make some changes around here. You know all those good classic-alternative leaning songs that WQMF plays, which made us unique, the songs 107.7 wouldn't touch? Well those are out! (The Clash, REM, 90's U2, Ramones) You know those middle of the road, singer-song writer rocks songs that built this station, GONE (mostly)! (Mellencamp, Springsteen, Bryan Adams) You know those interesting pop-rock 80's songs that we just recently starting playing again? OUT! (INXS, Fixx, Simple Minds, Blonde, Outfield, mid 80's Pat Benatar, Pretenders) You know those rocks songs we play without loud guitars. No MORE! (Elton John, Beatles, Billy Joel, Eagles (mostly), Fleetwood Mac, Journey (mostly), Cars)
Now, you know the songs we have overplayed for 34 years by bands that have large libraries of songs that we ignore? We are going to play them even more! (AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Zepplin, Skynyrd, Bad Company) Plus we are going to take the songs that The Fox has been overplaying for years, by bands that have large libraries of songs that we ignore and add those to our playlist! (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, RHCP, STP) We won't touch new songs by these bands, but we may play one or two songs from this century. I am so BRILLIANT!"

Well everytime a second hip hop station is tried in da ville something happens. In 1998 when 104.3 came on the air the company that owned B96.5 at the time ate them up land got got rid of them. Then when another company tried hip hop years later on 104.3 it didnt last due to that company though and now we have the beat on 93.1 but it is with iheart so i suspect this one has staying power. Third times charm.

I think what is confusing me is that it seems that The Fox (on their HD2) is playing more classic rock than WQMF is playing current rock on the main channel.

Looks like Fox2 is now simulcasting Rock Nation from Premium Choice. They still play Fox sweepers in between songs, but the 93ones have been removed. Nice thing about it is there's no commercials.

When was the last time Louisville was ever completely devoid of any radio station that plays current rock? We've had The Fox since the 90s, WQMF did the job in the 80s (before they switched to classic rock in the 90s because of The Fox), and before that there was WLRS.

Of course, the problem is that current rock isn't what it used to be. Go back around 2005 and before, current rock was popular... especially the 90s. The new stuff playing on current rock stations would also play on top 40 stations. That isn't true at all today. That's probably part of the problem. People keep talking about alternative being a niche genre, but new rock is just as much (really even more so) of a niche genre now.

I am sure they did there research. So sad. Nyc is also without a current rock station. Shame on them for makin louisville radio worse. Usually iheart is pretty smart about things this time not so much. Well fox 100.5/93.1 ya had a nice 23 year run on the ole terrestrial dial. R.i.p. Also remember in the early 80s when i was but a wee lad louisville was without a chr station for a year or so when kj 100 went soft rock and it took a minute for wjyl 101.7 to go top 40. So da ville has been void of other formats b4. Nyc was also devoid of country for 16 years till cumulus plugged there nash format in a few years ago.

QMF actually switched to classic rock about two years before the FOX signed on. WTFX used to have a sounder that said "The station that brought new rock back to Louisville"

It will be interesting to see what affect this has on the ratings. One school of thought is that a younger audience will migrate in some form to QMF, at least in their cars and at work. The lack of the FOX and the harder playlist helps them. Another way of thinking is that the younger people stick with Pandora, Ipods, etc and don't move to QMF. QMF in turn, also loses a big chunk of audience to 1077 and SFR has their best book ever. I don't pretend to be smart enough to know what will happen, but it will be interesting.

TNT Tilford sucks

Interesting that the "old" QMF streams on IHEART during the overnight. Old music and old imaging.

Yeah the WQMF stream on Iheart has been different for a couple years during the overnight (1 am - 5 am). They always played a much better variety of songs than the regular hours. I heard several songs from Pretenders, Ramones, Bowie, INXS, Doobie Brothers, Grateful Dead, even Elvis Costello. They also played deep cuts from the standards: Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, and Skynyrd. Q95 plays (mostly) the same songs during their overnight too.
It always made me think "what could be." And now, with the mess that is going on, it makes me think "what could have been."
I LIKE the idea of adding new rock, I just do not understand why they had eliminate so many other songs. It wasn't like they were not playing enough Zeppelin and AC/DC before. And what is the deal with all the Ozzy? I think TNT has an Ozzy/ Sabath fetish.
I am so glad that I live in Indiana and still can listen to new rock 102.5 (low budget, but who cares?), and 106.1, a larger playlist than 4 Louisville stations combined, hard rock and hits together, yes it IS possible.

Not to mention a Def Leppard fetish. I couldn't agree more with what you said. I like some of the newer cuts, but why eliminate so much other music? They should have just let Charlie do his thing without any corporate interference, and reaped the benefits.
Someone will start a new rock station in the Ville soon, but who? Summitt? Mainline already tried with WLRS twice so I don't see them attempting it. Wish I could come into a couple of million bucks.
Rocky and Troy-mornings
Future Bob-middays
Charlie Steele-afternoon drive
Black Frank-7-midnight.

Weekends, Frank could do his metal show and we would have a locals only type show as well.

The best part is, no 200 song playlist. We would have a 2,000+ playlist.

Yes I hope Charlie has the last laugh. Your outline for a station makes too much sense for today's corporate crap.
Btw- I looked at QMF s playlist and saw that they played Pretty Reckless, which I am more than fine with. But why would they play that (which is only a year or so old) but not play current songs from rock bands like RHCP or Shinedown, Thereory of a Deadman etc. It hurts my head trying to make sense of what they are doing.

I think there is no doubt that Charlie and 107.7 will be laughing. If this format tweak had been done right, it could have worked well. Moving the 90s to QMF had already been in progress anyway, and it is time. The 90s are the same time ago now as the 70s were when QMF switched to classic rock. By killing off the FOX, however and adding a few songs like Pretty Reckelss, all that is going to happen is a mass move to 107.7. The FOX could have been for the heavier new rock, the new cuts from Tom Petty, Chili Peppers, etc could have worked well on QMF, they are all classic rock artists now.
Oh well, I could be wrong and QMF takes over AMZ for first place. lol

What I still can't understand is why The Fox was changed when MY-FM 100.5 has terrible ratings despite being on a great signal.I have a feeling that if The Beat is successful on 93.1 then the format will move to 100.5.It's like they are testing the format on 93.1 to see how it does.I remember when 93.1 started with SHE FM and after a while it was moved to 98.9.

But movin she 93.1 was the beginning of the end for that station. I remember hearing backstreetboys when they moved. They never played that kinda music on 93.1 And she sadly went away and became star 98.9 all compliments of cc matthews.

Maybe they have finally put the Fox to sleep. This morning 95.7 HD is simulcasting the 93.1 station. I know they didn't care about the station, but wow! This whole mess has got to be one of the dumber if not "the dumbest" moves in Louisville radio history. It really feels like someone is sabotaging both stations.

More than likely, someone is just asleep at the wheel. Friday before last, they were running Cincinnati Reds production pieces on it. After I called and left TNT a voicemail, the issue was resolved. I haven't worked there in more than 6 years and I'm still puttin' out fires, lol.

Somebody has to do it! LOL
