Changes For Bangor Radio

More WEEI in more markets - now Bangor, ME and Keene, NH
One day after T-R-I reported that J.J. Jeffrey and "Doc" Fuller were converting two of their stations in the Portland, ME area to become affiliates of Entercom's WEEI, Boston-based sports network -Entercom announces it's also entering two more New England markets. Those are Bangor, via Blueberry Broadcasting's recently-acquired WBAI/910, which has been doing talk, and WAEI, the former CHR "B97.1." And in Keene, down in the southwest corner of New Hampshire, Great Eastern Radio/Vox is convering its 93.5 facility to "WEEY." Entercom says the growing network puts its WEEI-branded lineup in 12 of the 17 Arbitron-rated markets in New England, available to 8 million of the potential 12 million consumers in the region.

Worse decision I have ever seen in radio, replacing 2 nice top-40 stations from a Boston Sports network? I know for a fact people will be upset, people DO listen to B97, I am in the worst mood possible :'(

A lot of talk about the loss of CHR and not the fact that the Zone corp can use some sports comp? Too bad for B97 all those jocks will be displaced oh wait they all work on other stations too. WEEI will do better than BX ever did I say kudos and not the granola bar!

Clear Channel flipped 97.7 WNSX (a rimshotter, even moreso back then, before the signal got cleaned up) to Fox Sports back in 2003 or so, before reverting it back to the Fox simulcast and selling it off, other than that 'ZON has had little on the sports talk front for competition (they already lost U Maine sports, and everyone carries the Sawx so they've already got some competition)

I heart that one more of Blueberry's stations will flip formats and simulcast from Augusta. Any guesses? KISS? BEAR? LUCKY?

"Too bad for B97 all those jocks will be displaced oh wait they all work on other stations too."

Actually that's not true, Meg, who does nights for B97, I believe will be displaced. She's a very talented young broadcaster that's won awards from the MAB and has been out to the NAB as well and is now without a job.

With all these simulcasts/flips/budget hacking, I wonder if they'll be anyone left to cut in the fourth quarter. Maine radio is going to be tougher for employment here on out. I hope they rebuild in time.

was B97 the only station that pitched their music?

Thats the thing that got me, they actually pitched their music, lately I haven't been hearing it as much but still......

The art of pitching music is an interest to me :D

and the fact they are being replaced..... is very sad. WBZN has never pitched a song in their live, in fact they sound slower than usual!

Defense of Meg, I am sure she is talented and if so then they should hire her over on Z107.3 and perhaps hip up the night show? I can’t imagine being over 30 and doing nights on a CHR. The WEEI move is a good one, if you aren’t going to do anything with the radio station you might as well put a proven format on it.

1. I really hate sports
2. AM radio is better at talk. I hope they put it on WIKE 1490 but probably never gonna happen.
3. I am very worried about TOS's Future. It's been killed of all its special features but is still listenable and better than the krap I get stuck with in NYC tri-state CT region all summer. my best reguards go out to Rev, Rushman and Jessie who made the station just kick some serious ass I have already heard from Mainers and a few in the NEK that go to my school up in VT asking what the hell has happened to the station.
4. I'm BAAACK for another semester of college radio. (myspace it come 1st week of september) I can only scrub toilets so long. ;D I do hope to go beyond College radio but I know the Market sucks for trying to become a radio DJ. I only have a few more credits to go.
5. I can't edit past 30 min so my spelling and grammar well its bad....
6. Trout River Pizza and beer should make its way to Maine ::)
7. I'm just putting in my two cents so don't bash me too much ;)

I know from fairly reputable sources that WBZN pitches their music and always has. As an aside, I don't think WBZN gets enough credit here. The morning show is hilarious and are one of the few morning shows in town people will talk about later in the day. The night show has gotten consistantly high numbers for its audience and the overall staff of the station sounds creative, and is almost always on the road. WBZN is not just a CHR jukebox. They are actively involved in the community, they are funny, they are engaging, they know their audience, and their ratings reflect that. A market the size of Bangor can rarely support 2 CHR stations. It is impressive that 2 of them have lasted together as long as they have.

umm, i know for a fact that WBZN doesn't pitch there music
I have listen to the same song on WWBX B97 and it has sounded much different
like it was pitched.

I do think Bangor can support 2 CHR's cause WBZN lacks some of the rythmic that B97 had

I miss the "B Mine at 9" and "All Night Cafe" and "Mix @ 6" they used to do
thats what WBZN doesn't have are these little shows....

B97 was a super fun station to work at. My favorite element was the "Guilty Pleasure." My last shift was Friday, August 15th, 2005 & was an emotional one, knowing that after I finished the All Request Lunch Hour, I was going to put in my notice. I really enjoyed working with Cindy Michaels, Vanessa Fox, Melissa Mathers, DB Nyce, Big Daddy, John Shields, The X, and Holly Rae....Good times... Good times...

Regarding BZN...

Chuck Foster is a super Awesome guy.
Damien is a super Awesome guy.
I met the Kid a few times, and I am sure he is a super Awesome guy.
I don't know the rest of the staff that well, but they have some of my favorite peeps working in the same building. Thom Osborne in production, Nelson Jewell, and Michael W Hale down the hall. It's a solid crew they have. I bet it's a fun station to work at too, if it's a fun place to work, that usually that finds it's way into the overall sound of the station.

(cue violins)....I was there for B97's birth (hell, even before it was conceived)...It was part of me and I, it. I should say, it gave birth to me! Even though I am so far removed...it saddens me to hear it change. I hope no one ever forgets all that took place during its 10 years. ~C. Michaels

Well benwnn, we will have to agree to disagree about pitching the music.

I would think that WBZN is a fun place to work. I think that Chuck Foster has been there since the beginning and maybe Kid too? That sort of longevity doesn't happen without happiness on both sides. WBZN is a very good sounding station musically and with the DJs. I bet that they have similar features to those you will miss on B-97 and they have a bigger staff to do them. I am surprised they are switching WABI's signal with its heritage of adult standards. It was nice to hear George Hale on in the morning again, although it must be prerecorded as he is on the news talk station live at the same time.

It will be interesting to see how WEEI matches up with WZON. I think ZON sounds great but there isn't a lot that is more popular than the Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots right now. Having sports talk focused on Boston will be interesting.

Labor Day's this weekend..... any other former Clear Channel stations flipping formats? Will be an interesting weekend to keep listening!
