Changes To Website

I am glad this website moved to a new server where
you can edit posts as much as you want
The new software gives you one hour to edit posts. We are all learning the new software. The "look" of this website may change slightly as we customize the software.

Sorry I put this in the TV Schedules section. Wasn't
quite sure which board to put this in.

I don't mind the banner or side Google ads but I wish I had more control over them. Usually nothing bad, but just things I'm not interested in.
And I'm glad the ads that popped up in the middle of the page are gone.

Remember, advertisers in most media use a shotgun approach. They target based on the medium, not the user. They know that only a small percentage of consumers will be interested in and in the market for their offering.

I become more and more interested in car ads about 5 years after getting my last car; and then I ignore pickups, sedans and sports cars and all American brands... so, despite being a car user, I am only interested once ever 60 months and only in a specific set of brands and models.

Just noticed the "Like" button available on all posts. A lot of posters suggested it for the old site.

I'm sure there are other things I'll discover along the way.

See! I "liked" your post!

Google seems to think I (as a 64 year old male) buy women's clothes and need a virtual mate, based on ads that show up here and elsewhere.
Your computer is telling Google what kind of ad to display. We have only limited control over ad content.

In general, Google uses algorithms based only in part on you yourself. They also are based on specific geographic information based on your ISP or other data plus any data they may have "accumulated" based on your usage and that of your location. I don't drink hard liquor, but get ads for booze; I get ads for pickup trucks and never have owned one... and so on.

When you listen to the radio or watch TV, how many ads for things you don't want, use or need do you see?

I get some of the latter as well. Maybe the algorithm figures that older guys who spend a lot of their time either listening to the radio or discussing it might need a bit more excitement in their lives. I can't say I disagree.

If you remember the ads in the back of old radio magazines, they were full of mail-order Japanese brides and other oddities.
