Channel 3.1 Dallas?

Just noticed in NW Dallas a channel 3.1 showing "Gems TV" selling jewelry, and Ch 3.2 says "No Video Input" and a frame counter running. Anyone know the origin of this new station?

It's a low power digital station transmitting with a whopping 300 watts from one of the towers down in Cedar Hill. Amazingly, I can receive that 300 watt signal all the way up here in Plano...

The city of license for the station is De Soto, and the call letters are KHPK, which means that this is technically the digital companion channel for the analog low power on channel 28.

Wow THANKS! That explains the low signal level 16-21 on my TVs diagnostics screen. (Most other stations run 76-98 sig) Also interesting that it is on physical Ch 3 low VHF centered at 63 mHz.

It's KHPK-LP, analog ch 28, digital ch 3, owned by Mako Communications, licensed to DeSoto, and broadcasting from Cedar Hill. 300 Watts is max. power for any VHF LP digital station.

Mako Communications is HQ'ed in Corpus Christi, and is part of the Mintz broadcasting family. Brokered TV seems to be their specialty. They also own K31GL-D.

Their audio is so distorted it is unlistenable. Not so good quality control on the engineering.

I have just completed an LMA agreement with Mako Communications for one of the KHPK 3 channels. I will know Tuesday or Wednesday if it is 3.3 or one of the other positions. It is interesting to read everyones attempts at receiving the signal. I will provide some information on that when I have it. I will be running programming from AMGTV 100% of the time the first 60 days. Schedules are at amgtv.tv
AMGTV programming should be up by March 3rd or 4th. We are setting dishes and insertion equipment at Cedar Hill those two days.

I've generally been getting 3.1 and 3.2 decently at my home in Plano, so I wouldn't expect any problems with any sub-channels of this station. However, I hope that the audio levels are set better on your leased channel than is the case for 3.1.

Once you're up and running, I'll take a look.

Noticing today, the audio on 3.1 is still total distortion, and it sounds like the audio that should be on 3.2 is somehow being mixed on 3.1, and I hear no audio on 3.2. Amazing to me someone would set up a LP TV channel, and pay absolutely no attention to the audio being transmitted.

Doesn't surprise me. Until very recently the audio on KLDT 54 was undecipherable on my Samsung DTB-H260F, and on most converter boxes, I had to press the "Audio" button on the remote to hear their sound (and then press it again when switching to another station).

3.1 thru .3 all looking and sounding good now. And the color bars on 3.4 are nice to tweak in my TV on an OTA source.

KHPK 3.1 will soon be presenting Retro Television Network (RTN)-www.myretrotv.com
KHPK 3.2 is currently presenting AMGTV-www.amgtv.tv
KHPK 3.3 is going to be something else.

AMGTV isn't my cup of tea, but at least it's also on 34.2, which is easier to receive.

I would hope they would put Retro on a better signal. Few people can get 3.1. I can get 31 and 34 just fine in digital up here in Plano.
I have only gotten the PSIP info for 3.1 ONCE.

Mako should consider re-arranging their channels, especially after they get around to converting KATA 50 to digital too:
KJJM 34 could have all the religious subchannels
KATA 50 could have both the music subchannels
K31GL 31 could have RTN and AMGTV
KHPK 3 could then be used for infomercials, Gems TV, etc.

If they leave one of their best networks on KHPK 3, I'll be forced to mount an antenna on the roof to get it. (And it'll probably still go out every time there's a thunderstorm - worse than satellite.) That's ridiculous: I can get everything else I want with attic antennas - even KXII 12, which is 83 miles north of my house!

I called Mako, they do not control the channel line up. That is up to the folks who lease the channels. MTV3 and Cool Music for example do not want to be on the same station; as they see themselves as competitors and do not want to crosspromote each other. Same for the religious broadcastors. It would seem to be a "first come first serve" coupled with how much a leasee wishes to pay, coupled yet again to what is available. Also, the telephone numbers that sometimes appear on the Color Bar subchannels are not those of Mako, but of the leasee who is looking to sub-lease.

I put up an outdoor antenna, to get away from the high compression and just general shody picture on cable. I look at these LPTV digitals as just added bonus. Cool Music for instance sometimes just plays in the background as if it where radio.
