Charleston 100.5 The Drive Sold

CC Trust Spins Off WALC/Charleston, SC

CLEAR CHANNEL's ALOHA STATION TRUST is selling WALC 100.5 THE DRIVE CHARLESTON to RADIO TRAINING NETWORK, INC. for $2,300,000. RTN is a nonprofit that operates several noncommercial religious stations

I just wonder if this is the beginning of the end of Clear Channel here in SC as we know it and if they are going to sell off more stations in that cluster and sell off the Columbia cluster as well.

At least in the short term, no. It's entirely possible that, eventually, the private equity firms that now own Clear Channel will decide to further reduce the company's size to only top-50, or even to only top-10, markets, but it's not going to happen in the near future. It can't with the current credit crunch. Clear Channel is divesting 100.5 because the ownership change from publicly traded to private equity put them over the FCC ownership caps enacted in 2003.

HIS Radio 100.5! Bank on it!

Note that this company also owns WAFJ/Augusta, WLFJ/Greenville, and WLFJ-A/Greenville.

wlfj-a is leased from cc greenville. not owned by rtn.

Both are low-power stations that hardly cover the area. 100.5 will allow them to cover the whole area with a decent signal.

O.

hooray.

so glad I considered buying an HD radio..

back to the Sats..

The 'compelling content' gets less and less around here.

somebody shoot me now.

Well, that takes care of those two translators. His Radio is popular in the Charleston area, even with two tiny translator stations, with the 10 watts on 91.1 up on the Z93 tower covering North Charleston, Hanahan, and Daniel Island well, with a weaker signal in the Mt. Pleasant area.

The 91.9 signal is good all throughout the East Cooper area, and both signals can be heard all throughout the immediate Charleston area. Even though 100.5 was one of the worst signals in the Charleston area (has always been cursed with bad ratings since they flipped from Sunny to Alice), the His Radio move will work out, as they will get a much bigger signal for Christian music in this town.

It's sad that we lost this station, most likely, even though it got low ratings, but since it was basically run out of a closet for the last couple of years, its ratings have gone down. When it was Alice, people actually listened, and it started chipping away at 95SX for a couple of years. It hasn't worked since then.

Any idea when Radio Training takes over?? I'm guessing they will take over soon with an LMA before the official sale is completed.

Well, at least we have a better idea about what might be on 95.9 when it signs on. I mean, in the past, a radio group keeping a station online after the terrestrial signal flips is a sign they're not totally ditching the format. Whether it returns in HD or on another frequency, it's a sure sign Apex isn't done with modern rock.

My guess is that His Radio takes over in January...about the same time 95.9 signs on.

I bet we'll see the return of 96Wave in some form.

for what it is worth. religious factions have money and broadcast ministries are an outlet. someone has to pay the bills. since they are non profit we can expect more preaching and teaching.

While it's possible that 100.5 will air a ton of teaching and preaching programs, I know Radio Training Network's KWND "88.3 The Wind" in Springfield, MO is mostly, if not all, music. I've been told it's much tougher to make a living on paid religious programs unless you own a big network, like Salem, because the internet reaches about the same audience for a fraction of the price and church donations are down due to the current status of the economy.

i agree. i've never been in the position but with bills looming overhead, my knees might buckle. i gues that is where we are now

Except for WLFJ0AM, the bulk of their programming is music. They have some teaching times, but it is limited to mostly in the evenings.

Lhsh is right....they program mostly music. WAFJ and WLFJ, except for a little bit are music programming, which I expect 100.5 to be. It will be the "family friendly" blah blah...it will probably do well.

100.5's signal is weaker in coverage due to the fact they came on the air as a short shank station. 100.3 WORG's transmitter is in Bowman, SC at 25KW and was first on the air so 100.5 had to have a waiver and protect WORG's signal to the east to come on the air.
