Charleston 100.5 The Drive Sold

I am sure that 100.5 will do well as a HIS Radio affiliate because they have done really well everywhere else they have been including Greenville where I used to listen to them when I lived in Anderson

they can't be topped in GSP, they are pretty big..but I don't know how WMIT does, however they have some more teaching programs and sound "older." From what I see so far nobody has managed to take them down in the least bit, with the death clock (likely) ticking away on CC's 96.7 and Entercom's failed attempt at CCM/Country at 103.3/103.9 and 106.3. It sounds pretty good.

What a shame. Although some of the formatics were boring, The Drive played some good music and I enjoyed pulling them in here in Savannah whenever the weather was a bit wonky. Now Charleston has no outlet for Alternative music...you would have thought they'd make more headway with 96Wave's demise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't this leave Charleston without a new rock (of any form) station? Q104 and The Bridge play classic rock, don't they?

CC could add some new rock to 104.5 and send the listeners there..

The Bridge plays some deeper new rock tracks, and 98X has all the newer hard rock covered.

Which suprises me. Why isn't 98X in this equation? They kinda seem like the redheaded stepchild of Charleston radio. They're a good station to listen to, besides the fact that it seems nowhere near as loud as a rock station should be (I have to crank my car radio to listen to it at a good volume).

So, who wants to speculate where new rock will land in Charleston? Will it be 95.9, 98.1, 105.5? Will the format return to the area?

I still have reason to think 95.9 will go rock. Its really either that, oldies, or urban.

Radio-X

I forgot about 98X. They will probably benefit, as will the Bridge. Q is Classic Rock, doubt it will change.

I doubt 96 Wave will come back on 95.9. Had Apex thought it was a viable product, they probably wouldn't have dumped the format in the first place.

How about AC on 95.9? Either that or oldies, imo..

I wonder what will become of their dance subchannel - I doubt that would go well with His Radio. LOL

It was a dance subchannel? I heard that it was more of a real alternative, as opposed to the AAA/Alt the drive is.

dance?

charleston??

..regardless, I aint buying the HD radio now.

best of luck to the new radio group tho. hope it all works out for them. local programming with a positive message is always a good thing.

After my Thanksgiving visit to Chucktown over the weekend I think 95.9 should go Urban. Z-93 has been #1 for too many years now and they sound horrible. From the ghetto geechie jocks to the wack mix djs. Apex does a great job with Urban AC STAR 99.7 so I would believe they could do the same with an Urban mainstream. Charleston doen't have any energy so I'd say Urban or CHuRban, but B92 would prevent Rhythmic.

HIS Radio 100.5 is a done deal.

HD-2 HIS Radio Z
HD-3 HIS Radio Praise

Look on the website. It's all right there. They even stream it.

www.hisradio.com

p.s. They actually have 3 translators in Charleston, 2 are on the same frequency.

My question is when are they going on the air with HIS Radio 100.5? It will be nice to hear more than the translators the next time I am down in that area.

Any idea when Radio Training takes over?? I'm guessing they will take over soon with an LMA before the official sale is completed.

Hopefully they will wait till after the holidays. People need jobs a few weeks before the Xmas and all.

People need to keep jobs period.

Charleston still has 980AM. But I doubt many people tune in since you can hardly hear it especially at night.

So will HIS radio stay on the 91.1 & 91.9 frequency?

I am also hoping 95.9 goes Urban.

Well... here's my take on it... I listen to several of the stations in the Charleston area and the majority leave alot to be desired :-\- that's why I enjoy satellite radio. But in fairness, your assessment of WWWZ is a little off base, as you probably heard "part-timers" during your visit. I would agree that the stations (PT's) are the "worst"... when it comes to the "geechiness" as you call it. But, as a whole, I would say that the full-timers(6a-7p) are the most professional and their ratings reflect it... who cares if they have been number one for years? Obviously the listeners like what they hear... and they are able to give people good radio aside from the music. And from what I heard, you can tune into Star 99-7's afternoon jock and hear almost verbatim what the moring guy over on WWWZ said... so they must be doing something right. Gotta luv ya ShawtyBlack!

Being that Im 25, my choice of music is todays Hip-Hop and R&B. Z-93's 6am-7pm lineup is pretty relaxed when it comes to jocks. The night show is more of what I was talking about I guess. They did sound very "geechie" and ignorant. Most Urban radio night shows are full of energy and hip-hop, but what I was hearing sounded horrible. Z-93 is and will probaly always be #1 thanks to the strong signal and being the ONLY Hip-Hop and R&B choice in town. I remember visiting home listening to HOT 98.9 when they were around and they were pretty good. Most of the former jocks that were there are now doing bigger and better things. It seems as if that was one of Charleston's best Urban stations, but the signal was such a failure.

Z-93 could really use some competition. I'm not for sure, but I don't think they've ever had any serious competition, have they?

Urban on 95.9 could certainly be a viable format. It would give them a solid portfolio of stations.

But I'm still willing to bet $5 that 95.9 will go rock. I mean, in the history of modern format flips, no station that I have heard of has gone "internet only" just to stay that way. Party 93.1 in Miami turned into an HD-2 station, the legendary WHFS in Baltimore went on weekends on a FM talk station, then to HD-2 when they realized there was no point in a weekend rock format. Shoot, even 99X in ATL went HD-2 after they got bumped off of 99.7.

I mean, it's either that or Apex really believes in an internet radio station that's probably losing them money enough to put it on their corporate homepage along with the other terrestrial stations.

I personally think Apex wanted to put an adult hits format on before somebody else got to it. I'm sure they would have wanted to wait until 101.7 signed on to do it, but they were afraid of somebody getting the format first.

Either way, Apex comes out a winner on 95.9. Whatever signs on there will probably do quite well.

BTW, shouldn't 95.9 be signing on soon anyway? The president of Apex said in an interview with a Myrtle Beach newspaper back in August that they "needed to make some equipment adjustments" and would sign on by year's end.

Maybe 100.5 will change formats on Christmas Day. (Christmas 2004 was when they changed to The Drive.) 95.9 may also sign on then if not New Years.
