Charleston: Mix repositions itself again, 2GG returns, WCIV going dark?

Lots happening here locally, albeit from two broadcasters.

Mix 96 has repositioned itself yet again to, "Modern Hits", leaving 95SX as the lone CHR in town again. I'm sure this corresponds to the return of "Two Girls & a Guy" in the mornings, along with 'The guy" being the new PD. I do believe the station he came from in Portland, OR was a modern hits-type station as well. Also using the word "alternative" quite a bit in their positioners. I guess no more Iggy Azalea on 95.5. 2GG seems to be off to a reasonable good stat this morning, although the talk blocks are spaced a bit too far out.

As for Sinclair & the heinous act they're committing against WCIV, it seems to me that since Charleston is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, someone would swoop in & make Sinclair a "decent" offer for the former Allbritton facilities. Some on other broadcasting boards have speculated that Scripps, Hearst or Gannett should take 4, but that's not where the value is...it's in the ABC affiliation. The three aforementioned groups won't come into TV market #98(96? what is it now?) and buy what would amount to an independent station. It's also been made clear this market is too small to support a duopoly (which I find weird, as Jacksonville can support TWO duopolies at market #47). It would be nice to see a local group of broadcasters/investors (Maybe Apex? Evening Post group?, Charleston CVB?) come & save 4. This market really can't afford to lose a large OTA signal. I'm hoping the FCC will step in & tell Sinclair to find a buyer for 4, or the sale won't be allowed to go through (same deal in Birmingham). The FCC brass has already chastised Sinclair for their business practices. Maybe it's time to simply deny the sale of Allbritton to Sinclair? On a personal & unrelated note...why wont someone do a local weather channel on their .3? In Savannah, MG's WSAV has a great weather service on .3, I see no reason why sister station WCBD couldn't do one; maybe even have WSAV program it for them to save costs? Live 5 really should be doing one, as Live 5+ is....just dumb.

We are an under-radio'ed market, about to become under-TV'ed.

I'm confused as to what is actually happening to WCIV. I read it was moving to WMMP's .2 channel or something like that, but when the spectrum auction and repacking happen, this sort of thing will be common.

"Modern hits" sounds like CHR to me. What's different?

Actually vchimpanzee, nice to notice about WCIV, since I posted about it. And also, it is NOT going to WMMP's .2 signal, I think Charleston is too big for a Big 3 in a subchannel, because I think the biggest TV market with an ABC subchannel only is not technically South Bend, IN because they are the biggest market where the biggest ABC affiliate that is low-powered. However the biggest market with an subchannel only ABC affiliate is, Macon in Georgia, which is a #118 market. That title used to belong to WTRF in Wheeling, WV which is market #157, which was the first ABC subchannel in ABC's history. So actually, WMMP is going to put ABC on it's main channel 36.1, but MyTV will go to 36.2, but I think they will still be ABC 4, maybe to reference their future cable channel? :)

Between 95SX and MIX 96, who actually sounds better? Charleston has evolved within the past 10 years and the town has really got some energy. I'd assume 95SX has the high school and college crowd, but who's actually at the football games, concerts and on the party scene? I've always felt a solid party format Rhythmic would do well in Chucktown. I know Apex tried Pop as B92 and I figured 95.9 was B92 with a brand new name, but modern hits sounds like they're targeting an older crowd.

Maybe Mix 96 could change their name to B96... oh, wait. Then they might have some naming rights issues with CBS Radio. Because their is another B96 in Chicago.

Sinclair has found a minority buyer to acquire the license assets of WCIV. I'm not sure what's going on with it, though, because part of the issue is whether or not Sinclair will be able to close on the sale before being ordered to take it dark. Sinclair was basically rushed into this solution. It had to close the Allbritton deal within a certain timeframe or be out millions (the breakup fee in that deal was astronomical), but the FCC changed the rules after the deal had been filed.

I believe the duopoly rule requires a certain number of "independent voices" after the duopoly. It's possible that Charleston simply doesn't have enough TV stations to allow for the required number of voices.

Mix 96 is more local then 95sx. This is the first time 2 Girls and A Guy got billboards for the morning show. But I know its more to tell listeners to put 96.9 on instead of 95.1 in mornings and leave it on all day.

Apex does do the billboard advertising across Chucktown. I remember when STAR 99.7 had billboards around town. Apex vs Cumulus seems to be the radio war down there. Radiolives, what's broadcasting on 105.1(W286AY)? Radiolocator indicates it's a translator for MIX 96/WMXD. The coverage is at 250 watts covering the north area along the I-26 corridor. Is this one of the stations for "HIS" radio?
