Charlotte's "Most Memorable!"...?

Hey, it's Mr.Bill from WRFX ( I can't use Mr.Bill because somebody else is using it).....

I thank Herbiedradio for the consideration for "Charlotte's most memorable", but to include me on that list is crazy. Henry? Hancock? I'm not even close to being in their league. And all the other names on the other posts. Murphy, Larry Sprinkle (nice hair Larry!), my co-workers John Boy and Billy, Jack Gale, Rockin' Ray (the kindest, coolest cat I ever met. He befriended me when I first moved here 12 years ago.), I could go on. These guys have spent countless hours on the radio, sharing their lives, discussing the issues, putting on fabulous charitable events, being a huge part of the community. I play lot's of great music and add the occasional smart ass comment. And get paid to go to bars to drink beer and introduce bands. A great life, but not "memorable". Big difference.
Just look at what folks like Brotha' Fred, Ace & TJ, No Limit Larry (and the super funny Tone X) are doing now. The benefits, the fund raisers, the auctions, these guys are all tireless and I'm a big fan of each. They are the next generation of "talent" that will be the next "Charlotte's most memorable" for what they do. Their names go way above mine on that list.
But again, thanks for the thought! I owe you a cold one....

Mr.Bill

p.s. I check this board every now and then, and I like how you guys think. Keep up the great work!

My $.02:

Kilgo at night on WROQ (The Hot 8 @ 8 made me love the sonovox as a kid)
Dennis Reese & Helen Little on Kiss 102 (The original "Flush the Format" in Charlotte)
Rock 'n Roll Animal ("Mull", God rest his soul, "Z a'hundred")
Bill Dollar & Paul Franklin on 'SOC
Russell & Flynn (on 'BT, not on MIX)

BTW, Mr. Bill, you rock dude, I love the Shanty Song on Friday afternoons.

Great selections Outtaradio. All of them! Amen on Kilgo in particular. That reminds me, his dad, Jimmy, should be on this list. One time morning man at Big Ways, among other talents.
Thanks!

Bill - saw you on here and thought I'd say hello!

Hello!

Jeff Wicker- WBCY afternoon guy in the 80's. "Mr. Charlotte!"
I sometimes tune in to 98.7 Simon ("We play everything"), which some Charlotte-area listeners can probably hear, just to see what kind of nonsense the recorded announcer is doing between songs. Unfortuantely, sometimes he says, "The WICKER show!" I suppose I could listen to the R-rated samples from that program instead, but it's not what I wanted. That usually precedes a commercial break, and those are LONG.

Now... WHO HAVE I FORGOTTEN??
--Em
Chuck Boozer! Mornings on EZ-104 (now K-104.7) while I was in college. Fired from nearly every station in town.

Whatever happened to Calvin? He was on 95.7 for a while.

Calvin is retired, living in the Charlotte area and having serious health issues. I get frequent email forwards from him, but not much else.

Thanks. Sorry to hear that. Calvin, if you read this I'm wishing you the best.

When I first met Calvin, he was doing "As It Was" Sunday nights on WRFX. This was probably the best free form FM radio I have ever heard. I developed a great friendship with him from the days at WRFX. He had a true vision of what album radio should be. I am sorry to hear about his health issues and wish him nothing but the best.

Calvin and I have been very close for the last several years. He is in very poor health and these kind words you guys have posted are going to make his day. I'll be sure to pass them along to him today.

Wow! Calvin. I grew up in Charlotte during the late 60's and early 70's. Followed him from WRNA to WRPL to WROQ and beyond. I ended up getting into radio myself for awhile. He was a wondeful inspiration. Much of the music I listen to today I heard first from Calvin. Obscure stuff --- Brian Auger, Bill Puka, Green Lyte Sunday, Jimmy Spheeris, and on and on. I'm also sorry to hear about his health and wish him the best. He is appreciated.

That is SO true. All you had to hear was "Hi...I'm Calvin" and you knew you were in for some good music. A good friend of mine was CE at WIST/WRNA and some of the stories I was told probably couldn't be repeated even here for fear of prosecution. Although I think the statute of limitations is out on most of it. That was GREAT radio back then.

I, too, wish Calvin the best regarding health issues.

My most memorable would include the days -- some 17 years ago -- that I interned at WBT and Brad Schultz was my internship supervisor. One day, Brad and Mike Collins decided to play their individual squeeze boxes on the air. That was a lot of fun.

I would also include Mr. Bill on the list of "most memorable." And Jay Kilgo (fellow Western grad, go Cats!!!)....also Henry Boggan.....and Pandora from The Fox.....I also liked Spires and Krantz during their WBT run......and, as a teenager, I listened to the likes of J.J. McKay -- especially in driver's training (that's why I nearly wrecked the car my first time out!).....

Boo Baron as well.....but for those of us who put time in around AM stations in the greater Statesville/Mooresville area (going way back here)......Dwight Barker. He made bluegrass something to listen to.......

Is that the same J.J. McKay who is now on Oldies 106.1 by satellite?

No, that was a guy.  He was last heard in Denver doing mornings on the CBS oldies station out there.  At last report, he had been on the beach for a couple of years, unable to find another opportunity.  You can access his website at www.jjmckay.com.
