CHR Overload

A lot of the local stations are leaning more current with a CHR sound.

Of course you have WAKS of Cleveland and WDJQ of Canton since they have been programming the format for years, but now you have WKDD of Akron and WQAL of Cleveland - along with even WDOK of Cleveland to an extent.

Plus in Akron - you have in the market the following: WZIP, WDJQ, WAKS, WKDD, WHOT and WQAL all coming to at least parts of the area.

There seems to be an increasing overload of CHR in local radio. Do you guys think it is becoming too much or it is not a problem?

I just don't want see too much of a current hits-oriented wave on the station.

CHR has a very safe and fun dancy/poppy sound to it right now. I'm sure that's a big reason all these stations are leaning towards it right now. As much as I love the current state of CHR, I do believe people will get burned out on it, and CHR will return to the hip-hop/rock mix (uggh!) that it was a few short years ago. Then stations like WQAL will go back to playing more John Mayer-ish (double uggh!) music again.

Don't for get WHBC 'Mix 94.1' Not sure how well Star 97.1 WREO comes in there and to the west there's WCPZ/Sandusky
I think it's a bit much in our area anyways with all of the aforementioned stations playing it. I wonder how much all this will help the Wave. Maybe they can put some more gold-based ac tunes into their playlist.

I left out WHBC-FM for the simple reason they are still committed to airing flashback lunches ("Mix Bistro") and weekends. The latter on occasion as I've heard them air 90's weekends. I've felt Mix is the most traditional Hot AC in the NE Ohio region.

Come to think of it, WDJQ also does a flashback lunch and weekend, so HBC should be included. NOW there's an overload in Canton along with Akron - WDJQ, WHBC and WKDD - unless WHOF should be included too.

WKDD, WQAL and WDOK all used to have flashback programs, but they're now focused more on newer music. Not sure about WCPZ and WREO. Sandusky's Mix might come in well in Lorain County while Star would come in Lake and Geauga counties.

Or it could be like Columbus a Classic hits/ Country music overload city. Though I'll admit WDJQ and WHBC targets Canton, WKDD targets Akron, WHOT targets Youngstown, and WQAL and WAKS targets Cleveland. Since Cleveland is pretty close to Akron and Canton being able to pull all those station makes you get the feeling you are overloaded. Here in Columbus 4 country stations and 3 Classic hits target us. If you include a variety hits station that leans classic rock and 2 other classic rock stations here you can say we have 6 Classic hit channels targeting us.

I'm in the Youngstown/Warren area for the next 3 weeks for work and there's 3 CHR's to pick from besides some of the Akron and Cleveland stations that I can pick up. Coming from Columbus, I'm in CHR heaven. Driving into the area I could pick up Z88 from Ashland all the way to Alliance. I absolutely love WZIP! NE Ohio is lucky to have some of these stations compared to all of the lame stations we have in Columbus.

I'm not knocking the format. I happen to support the format very much. Of course it would do well in PPM. I'm just concerned there would a burnout where listeners would get sick of the radio options to where stations would have to adjust. BTW, Akron and Canton are not PPM markets.

Meanwhile, some of us NE Ohioans wish we had a commercial station similar to CD102.5 ;D
