"Christian" CHR??

Wondering if anybody here has ever listened to "Christian" CHR, and has any thoughts about how it compares to mainstream CHR/Pop.

I can't stand Christian CHR, but then again I'm non religious. The South Park episode that made fun of Christian Contemporary music pretty much sums up my views - you just take whatever hip Rock, pop, and Hip Hop sounds and songs that are on the charts and add the word Jesus/lord/my savior/my light while replacing the more raunchy lyrics. For the most part this music just doesn't sound very authentic to me, although there are exceptions like Mary Mary "Shackles", Jars of Clay "Flood", and the Switchfoot records which I all enjoy.

Christian CHR sounds more rock leaning. I'm not a real big fan of Christian music (most of it is mumbling to me) but a number of CCM songs have stood out and have become favorites.

If you've ever heard Christian Alternative, thats sort of interesting. I occationally pull in 88.5 WRGX from Sturgeon Bay, WI. All kinds of punk rock and alternative style Christian music.

My experience over the years with Christian CHR is that it indeed is more rock leaning than mainstream CHR/Pop... Personally, I'm definitely a fan of the format along with Christian AC... the one Christian CHR station I can listen to out here in So.Cal is called K-Life 89.5 (KLFF - San Luis Obispo)... they are a trimulcast along the Gold Coast of So.Cal... They have a wide variety in their playlist and they do include some songs/artists that would be considered Urban (Souljahz, some Stacie Orrico and Rachael Lampa). I also like that some stuff like the aforementioned Orrico, Relient K, Lifehouse, Switchfoot, MercyMe has crossed over to CHR/Pop over the past few years... I'm still amazed that Switchfoot went top 10 CHR/Pop mainstream with 2 songs off one album... Not even the legendary Michael W. Smith pulled off that feat...

I think Rachael Lampa, Bethany Dillon and Third Day have the most future "crossover potential" as they all seem to have creating the Christian CHR hit record down to a science...

Also, as I'm sure you know, Jars Of Clay and DC Talk made waves about 10-11 years ago at mainstream CHR/Pop with "Flood" and "Just Between You And Me"... both went top 15.

Thanks, Jeremy...

I'm definitely not forgetting about Stacie and Switchfoot... they are two of my favs... they've both accomplised so much the past few years at mainstream CHR/Pop - so much that many listeners to the format perceive them as mainstream CHR/Pop artists, not knowing where they are truly focused... I've had to correct several people on other boards saying stuff like "Stacie needs to get something new out soon or people are going to forget her" or "Switchfoot's new album is a failure", not at all realizing that both artists have their core listeners at Christian radio and that's where their focus is and should be... any mainstream CHR/Pop listeners they get is just gravy IMHO....
