I thought Coast blew off the All Christmas Thing last year. With Lite "All Christmas". There is no Piont.

Maybe they are trying to get people interested the Bee's new thing. The way the Bee is set up now they could throw in some Whitney Houston or Luther Vandross and it would nt hurt.

In other words if your not into the Christmas deal try the Bee.They can tweak around to keep listeners with them.

> > Lite 105 AND Coast 93.3

Unless this is being done for sales reasons or a tie-in to promotions they have coming up for the holidays I think it's a bad move for Coast. They've spent months shaping up the music and claiming it's all about the variety and now it's all Christmas to follow suit of Lite? A station that plays Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol is following Lite's lead? They did the Christmas music format for a couple of years and regardless of any temporary spikes, they end up flat ratings wise. Then last year they didn't do it, and now they're back at it. So has it worked in the past or hasn't it and how are they going to affect what their listeners are now expecting? Maybe there's a rhyme or reason from a money angle but for consistency sake it's a bad idea and a bad time to do it. I don't see either station's listeners going over to Boston stations. Morning listeners routinely listen to the same show even with changes like this. The rest of the day is up for grabs and the long-term result will be no change. Even with that said I still think this is a bad time to do it.

I couldn't agree more! They finally had things tweaked so it was sounding decent. Then they blow it up a day late and a dollar short after their competition already beat them to the punch. Combine that with them NOT doing it last year and it shows "knee-jerk programming" on Oxford St. No one actually looking at the whole picture... just reacting to what someone else in the market does. Lame!

Remember this:

WSNE-93.3 is A Christmas Channel (Clear Channel) Property.

And Clear Channel is the company most agressive about programming all-Christmas formats.

The decision for WSNE to go all-Christmas may not have been made in Providence. It may have been made in San Antonio.

I wonder how many PDs and MDs have to bite their tongues if management or corporate dictates they flip to Christmas music. Bad move on Coast's part. Just totally unnecessary.

If I were the head of the FCC I'd ban all XMAS Music stations. If a station wanted to go all XMAS they'd only be allowed to for 3 or 4 days before Christmas. Regular programming would have to resume at 6AM local time on December 26.

Commissioner Scrooge... ;o)

there is absolutely NO reason for any station to play ANY christmas music before Thanksgiving. the only reason one station plays christmas music so early is to get a jump on the other and to be honest...it does more harm than good in my opinion 'cause like everyone has said so far...WHO THE HELL WANTS TO HEAR CHRISTMAS MUSIC THIS EARLY?

next year I bet we hear "jingle bells" the day before halloween!

How about we leave Christmas music to stations with a CHRISTIAN format

The more I think about it, the more rediculous this idea to make regular AC, Hot AC even oldies stations play all Christmas music is. Yes, we are a predominantly Christian country, but what about those people that are not? We should they have to listen to all Christmas music on their favorite stations? I say leave the Christmas music to the Christian formatted stations so those that aren't Christian can still hear their favorite music. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: How about we leave Christmas music to stations with a CHRISTIAN format

I've held my tongue for awhile on this topic..but this post pushed me over the edge.
What is with all you Christmas music-haters ?

First of all, you can't relegate Christmas music to Christian-only stations without surrendering more than half the potential titles. Christian stations would likely play only the religious-based tunes, giving you guys one MORE thing to complain about: too SHORT a Christmas tune playlist.

Secondly, if you don't like the Christmas tunes..CHANGE THE DIAL. Go listen to something else instead of sitting around complaining for complaining-sake.

I, for one, enjoy the holiday music (YES, even as early as a couple days before Thanksgiving)..so I say, if Lite or SNE or SRS or Oldies-103 or whomever wants to go "all-Christmas," let 'em..and replan your listening habits accordingly.

Sheeesh !

Good points. Frankly I don't mind it at all. I think it's more a matter of people discussing the reasoning behind it, which by the way is not entertainment, but revenue. My one and only problem with all Christmas is that it requires too much filler music: familiar songs by people you could care less about singing them (like who really wants to hear Vanessa Williams sing a Christmas song) or unfamiliar songs by familiar people that really don't sound Christmassy. A station that chooses to be selective can play only the well known songs. I know this is all a matter of opinion, but to me there are only one or two versions of any one holiday song I even want to hear. The rest of the versions are filler and background music.

There was a controversy over on the Atlanta board about this. Some believed that Salem's Fish down there (WFSH 104.7) should play only Christian Christmas songs, like one of the competitors (WVFJ 93.3). Others agreed that The Fish should play any songs to get listeners in the season and eventually make them permanent listeners after December 26.

Every year since this All XMAS Fad began people have been saying that. This year the first all XMAS Station in the Country was 96.1 The Touch in Altantic City. It flipped in early October.

That's absolutely rediculous. Why couldn't Christian stations play ALL Christmas tunes? Christmas is a CHRISTIAN celebration!

How about changing the RADIO? At least Satellite Radio gives non-Christians, or those (Christians and all) who would rather hear a local station's normal format instead of Christmas 24/7, the chance to hear the music they like and choose when they want or if they want to hear holiday music at all. Satellite Radio has holiday music stations where you can listen when you want and still switch back without missing out on hearing the other format. Can't do that when your local commercial radio station decides to ditch it's regular format for holiday music.

Will Christmas Music hurt or help LITE and Coast? Could this be what propels WCTK to the top slot?

Just a thought.
