Christmas In Boston

Well…since the Christmas catalogs have already started to arrive in mailboxes, I figured I’d throw this question out:

What station(s) do you think will go all Xmas this holiday season?

Besides the obvious “12 (painful) days of Xmas” on WPLM, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say the WAAF simulcast on 97.7 might switch to introduce a format change after the new year.

Pretty much a foregone conclusion that Oldies will be THE Christmas station for this market. They've spent the last 3 years making it their niche. And given the success that they've had with, you could almost bet that they'll be the ONLY game in town this time around. The demo and market will EXPECT it. In addition, Oldies sales is already marketing the package, and from what my sources tell me, it is pretty much 3/4 sold.
But this is Boston radio, and stranger things have happened.
Geezzzz, August isn't even over, and we're talking christmas???????

Remember Magic 106.7 went all Christmas last year. I thought they had a pretty good playlist. They played a bit more newer Christmas music than Oldies did, which isn't surprising, since Oldies is strictly an "Oldies" music station.

Check out your local K-Mart.

Depending on when your local schools open, expect that one week before that date they'll be selling off the "back to school" stuff and clearing shelf-space for the Christmas decorations.

Once upon a time they'd have special merchandise for Halloween and then Thanksgiving but those are so politically incorrect these days that they jum from "Back to School" directly to Christmas merchandise....only they call it "Holiday Merchandise".

Tick, Tick, Tick....the countdown to The Holidays just started!

Now the BIG question is which Boston area station will be the first to start Holiday Stunting!

Sheathedj, maybe your station will run loop of Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer for the week before XMAS? or even better Santa and His Old Lady,by Cheech and Chong?

Since it seems like Chiristmas radio in the boston market is spelled WODS,I say When will they start?

My bet is on novmeber 6th.

I plan to play Christmas music on my show just before Christmas on DEC 22
Most of the lost Christmas music all clean nice happy and sad and glad Christmas Music

Thats if I find and have time to plan it out

I have no plans on going to Boston so things can fall down on me

I think there will just be one station in Boston this year, WODS. And when they return to their regular format, they will be 103.3 WODS. They will drop "Oldies" (just a gut feeling).

I don't think that Oldies 103.3 will be rebranding itself after their Christmas stint. But perhaps, and this is a gut feeling, that Mike FM might get into the Christmas act this year. Just a hunch.

And WAAF's simulcast will be staying on 97.7 after the new year.

I think that WODS is doing well enough so that they wouldn't want to fix something that's not broken, not on the local level anyway, unless they get some directive to rebrand from CBS on the national level.

I have heard subtle mentions of "Boston's 103.3" in some of their promos and liners. Have also noticed on the latest batch of T-shirts (I won one on a recent Horizon's Edge cruise with JJ Wright) that the "The Greatest Hits of the 60's & 70's" line is NOT on the the shirt.

yes that could be a hint of the "oldies" part of their name being dropped. More 80s cuts being added maybe?

Though if you look at their site, "oldies" is used all over the place, still.

I don't want to come across as bah humbug, but wouldn't it be nice if someone would just go 'traditional' Christmas. ie, play real Christmas music that is about the holiday and not insult us by playing George Michael and Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. Then again, I suspect that would be a hard sell in today's tasteless music cuture.

Tell that to the folks who miss the old WCBS in New York. THe concept of Jack 103.3 is still not impossible ,and i think had they kept the annoucers in New york,Jack would be more accepted.

Yes WODS does have some good music, but the playlist is WAY TOO TIGHT.

Well, you see, Boston ALREADY has that type of station 93-7 Mike FM. But I do agree about 103.3 playing a lot of 80s cuts. Another one I've heard on there that hasn't been mentioned is "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes.

To us radio and music afficionados who post on boards like these, it is. But, we're in the minority among the listening public. WODS plays to the majority of everyday listeners who are not avid radio and music fans, and who really do want to hear their same few favorite hits over and over again every day. I'm sure that if they tried adding deeper oldies to their rotation and risked playing songs that some of their listeners may not know, their ratings would go down from their very respectable current showings.

Believe it or not, I think that's what happened to WBMX back when they did...remember last year when they did those "Whatever" weekends? Well, I think the reason why they stopped doing that is because a lot of young people listen to that station, and when they started playing all those older songs that the younger generation has never heard before, a lot of listeners were tuning away. This is actually true with most radio stations in major markets like Boston. I remember before they changed to "Big Hits", B101 in Providence played much more variety than WODS. But I think B101 has become more of a "classic hits" station now. I think this might be the direction that WODS is going in.

There were also well-founded rumors that WBMX did the "Whatever Weekends" as preparation to test the waters to flip to a "Jack" format, but Entercom beat them with "Mike" at 93.7. After that happened, it was of no advantage for them to keep doing the "Whatever Weekends".

A blatant example of a station failing by widening their playlist was in fall 2001 when WROR tried adding late 60's and 70's progressive AOR deep album cuts to their Classic Hits format. It was called "Timeless Rock and Roll Classics". A small "cult" of music afficionados loved it, myself included, but their ratings among the mainstream public took a deep nose dive. After two books they were back to Classic Hits, and their ratings came back up.

That is so sad. Do you think we'll ever see another radio station like BCN circa 1980?
