christmas music in philly who will do it this year ?

Could someone explain WHY stations go all Christmas so early. I understand there is usually some kind of ratings bump, but advertisers also know, come January, that those numbers represent programming that is not on the air anymore,, yet stations are basing their advertising rates on those ratings and not how the station performs with normal programming. Do stations benefit from playing Christmas music (or is it officially "holiday favorites") over the following months, or does listenership return to pre-Christmas levels?

I know this gets debated every year, its another Christmas tradition.

As for the advertisers buying in January based on December numbers, well, then shame on them for being suckered. But it also stands to reason with a track record of significantly higher ratings in November/December, that a premium can be charged there to boost the revenue.

While I'd love to have the mixed-in approach that seemed to work for years, that horse left the stable.

Don't forget the Chanukah show on WHAT for 8 days last year amidst the classic christmas. But that is also just a prime example of when sales leads programming.

I'd expect them to be Christmas by Nov. 15th.

Last year, on FM, there was NOW 97.5, B101, and OGL. NOW was a brand new station and they flipped on 10/31. Started on a Friday afternoon. They stopped briefly the following, then went back that afternoon, and stayed all-Christmas right through the season. Their numbers exploded. They never actually beat B101, but were #2 in the market for several weeks. And, I can tell you NOW never played Jessica Simpson. They played a very tight playlist of traditional artists.

As soon as B101 started paying Christmas, their numbers went wild and ran away from the rest of the market.

WOGL actally went down in the ratings. Their music was terrible and their talent was miserable.

B 101 has had no serious challenger to Christmas since Sunny in it's first couple of years. HD channels on CBS are not going to have any impact on B.
