Christmas Shows In Your Area

Seems to me there aren't many Christmas shows left on TV. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see "A Christmas Carol" on anymore. WGN-TV used to show "Scrooge" at 10pm on Xmas Eve but now they've replaced that with their annual showing of a retrospective of childrens' shows they USED to air.

We don't see many holiday movies either, but I guess that is cause of DVDs. Still I would expect stations to air Christmas episodes. WWME-CA (ME-TV) in Chicago did this today but I noticed a lot of the shows still don't have Christmas themes.

Of course the Yule Log is long since passed.

What about in your area? Have the Christmas Shows been declining in number. I remember it's a far cry from the days of 1989 when "It's A Wonderful Life" was on every hour but I do recall the shopping channels showing wonderful public domain Christmas movies instead of just more shopping.

A few weeks ago, CBC Newfoundland aired yet again Land and Sea's "Any Mummers Allowed In?", and has been a popular favourite since it first aired in late December 1985/early January 1986.

Speaking of CBC and Christmas, the main network has shown various Christmas specials, and coming up on the 27th, a special Hockey Night in Canada doubleheader. However, the Maple Leafs won't be seen nationwide.

Back to Christmas, CJON/NTV will also show Christmas specials today and tomorrow.

...for a change.

There have been versions of A Christmas Carol on TCM and AMC. Both of them are carrying several Christmas movies. It's a Wonderful Life was on NBC last week, and is on again tonight. ABC has How the Grinch Stole Christmas tonight as well.

Meanwhile ABC Family and the Disney channels, and also Hallmark and Lifetime (YUK!) are covered with Christmas shows.

Excuse please, but the yule log is NOT very much passed but is now "syndicated" around the country. As one example, KCAL-TV Los Angeles plans four hours of the Yule Log from 6 to 10am Christmas morning

And of course WPIX CW11 had their Yule Log from 9:00-1:00, followed by March of the Wooden Soldiers--colorized version (BLECH!). The Log used to be on Tribune-owned stations like WLVI in Boston, but since Tribune sold LVI to Sunbeam--it's the same CW56 garbage (at least from looking at the sked on their website)

Here was the morning schedule for KWGN TV in Denver

5:00-9:00 Yule Log
9:00-9:30 Father Knows Best (Christmas Episode)
9:30-10:00 Dennis The Menace (Christmas Episode)
10:00-10:30 Bewitched (Christmas Episode)
10:30-11:00 Flying Nun (Christmas Episode)
11:00-11:30 Monkees (Christmas Episode)
11:30-12:00 Partridge Family (Christmas Episode)

It was nice to see some classic TV for a change instead of the mindless dribble that is pumped out like raw sewage day after day. It just shows that the programming is still out there, available for airing, now we just need a station manager to grow a sack and start showing it on a regular basis. If they insist on showing bitchney spears, or america's next top slut, or american idiot, that's what the overnight programming block is for. GIVE US CLASSIC TV FANS OUR TV BACK!

In Canada, the A-Channels and Citytv stations all had Yule Log specials this morning. CKCO in Kitchener had its annual St. Andrew's Christmas Service from St. Andrew's Church in Kitchener, something CKCO has been showing for a very long time. None of the other CTV stations that I know of had any local specials. Also, all the CTV affiliates in Ontario received a special regional edition of the evening news, fed from CFTO Toronto.

CHCH in Hamilton shows Midnight Mass at Midnight from a church in Hamilton every year, and this year was no exception. They had a special edition of Morning Live this morning, which was rebroadcast in place of the 6 PM news today. Radio-Canada had French Mass, I assume from Montreal, this morning.

The Sound of Music is on the CTV network right now. A classic, but not a Christmas classic.

In Montgomery, Alabama, the CW affiliate carried the Yule Log from 5 am - 9 am, then had a "Music in our Schools" special (that was very well produced by the local ABC affiliate) that aired afterwards.

CBS did a great job, as always, with their traditional Christmas programming. My kids were able to watch "Rudolph," "Frosty," and similar shows on the same network I watched 'em on 25, 30 years ago - except the CBS SPECIAL PRESENTATION graphic didn't appear before the shows!

We did watch a lot of ABC Family - they had quite a bit of the Rankin-Bass holiday stuff from years past, which we enjoy. But I was actually quite pleased with the amount of choices we had this year. The Big Three weren't so great, but then again - when are they ever these days? :-\

CBS' "Special Presentation" intro was a pop-culture monument in/of itself. Even though it appeared before specials year-round (i.e. Grammys), it's always associated with Christmas. One of the most-treasured video items in my collection is "A Charlie Brown Christmas", as recorded off the air in 1978 (WBMG-42/B'ham), complete with the "Special" sig, Dolly Madison, Coke and Mickey D's commercials. And best of all, the audio is vintage AT&T -- that wonderful, narrowband mono sound we grew up listening to. Somehow those Christmas specials aren't the same with the high-falutin' audio, DVD quality, etc. I watch the 29-year-old (!!!) 'low-fi' recording and I'm a kid again.

Oh, and did you put "Montgomery", "ABC affiliate" and "well-produced" in the same sentence?? Oy, the apocalypse is at hand .... ;D

Next thing you know, you'll be talking about the high-quality newscast on Birmingham's Channel 42!

Some of the best Christmas programming I saw was in 1983, when WTAE-4 in Pittsburgh celebrated their 25th. Anniversary by running Christmas-themed episodes from their past history all day on Christmas.
I am hoping they will do the same to celebrate their 50th. anniversary next Christmas, which will be their
last in the classic NTSC Analog format.
