Christmas

So far, as of November 15th at 5:36pm, no one has flipped to all-Christmas yet in Boston. I've been flipping around, mostly between WODS and WMJX, and even Mike FM, to hear the sounds of sleigh bells, but I'm still hearing the Bee Gees and Dido. I'm guessing that Friday might be the day, if anyone's going to do it, kind of as an opening weekend to the holiday season.

Every year many of these messages boards have the SAME STUPID THREADS about radio stations playing Christmas music TOO EARLY!

Is this just another way of bi***ing or what?

It's obvious that the format pleases a few people....including the radio groups who make a lot of money off of it? But there's nobody forcing ANYBODY to listen to it.

Why can't all the naysayers who hate the idea of playing seasonal music too early FINALLY GROW UP? Stop complaining about a format which only lasts for 4-7 weeks out of every year?

Yeah! And next year I'm going to complain to Sears and Walmart about putting out their Holiday merchandise and displays out before halloween. And send nasty letters to L.L. Bean, Herrington, Lillian Vernan and Neman Markup about sending me Christmas catalogues to me in September. And...........and...bah humbug.

I think the only way WMKK-93.7 would go all-Christmas is if Entercom plans to change the format right after Christmas.

"Mike" has been a disapointment in the rationgs so far, but I think Entercom will wait until at least Spring to decide whether to "blow it up".

I could see WMJX-106.7 go all-Christmas, in light that most soft AC's around the country do, even stations like New York's WLTW and Providence's WWLI-105.1 that perrenially are at or near the local Arbitron ratings both in 12-plus and target demographics.

However, WMJX has never gone all-Christmas on the air, even though (1) it has had an all-Christmas webcast on their homepage during the Holiday season for the last few years, and (2) several other Greater Media stations have gone all-Christmas in the past and at least one, a Soft AC in New Jersey similar in format to WMJX, is expected to do so again this year.

I suspect in addition to a Christmas Music Hard Drive being readied at 83 Leo Birmingham Parkway, whose output will be fed to 103.3 FM, another Christmas Music Hard Drive is being readied at 55 Morrisey Boulevard and might even start feeding it's output to 106.7 FM (in addition to the Internet) very soon.

Sometimes companies do what is best for them in the market that they're in, not necessarily always following what their similar stations in other markets are doing under different circumstances with different competition.

WMJX has not gone all-Christmas in the past because their main competition in this market, WODS, has always gone all-Christmas. I'm sure that the folks on Morrisey Boulevard are not going to simply follow what their other similarly formatted stations in other markets are doing if they know that, with the WODS Christmas competition, they would be shooting themselves in the foot to do the same thing in this market.

I don't know why you always expect every Boston station to follow like sheep what other similar co-owned stations in some other markets are doing at all times. Despite national ownerships, the groups still have local PD's with awareness of the particular competiton in the market, and how to best work it to their advantage. The stations are not 100% programmed only by national directives.

Someone posted earlier how the stores are gearing up waaaay in advance.
Stop & Shop put the 149.95 SNOWBALL in their stores LAST WEEK OF SUMMER.

Now that's just plain ridiculous.

The best Christmas music is sprinkled in with regular station play.
All Christmas all the time is like the old version of Muzak.

Oldies 103 would be wise to keep the regular music and play cherry picked
Phil Spector Christmas album, Motown Christmas album, John & Yoko,
Brenda Lee and all the usual suspects. Going all Christmas drives their
core audience away.

I would also think it does, but they've done it every year.

I'll second that.

And I'll third that...although I hate agreeing with Joe.

I'm a regular WROR listener with occasional sprinkles of Oldies 103. I wont be getting my Oldies sprinkles starting on Friday and for the next 37 days after that due to all the Christmas music. I'll just stick with WROR all the time I guess.

What station or stations will all of you be tuning in to avoid early holiday tunes??

I'll bet you do most of your holiday shopping on 12/24....when many retailers mark their seasonal items down by 50%???

Sounds (to me) like you're a radio grinch who could use a visit from "CINDY LOU WHO!"
