I want to make a comparison to the gold standard of Dallas TV news
in the '70s, '80s, and part of the '90s: News 8 on WFAA. None of the
front four that helped make that station, in the opinion of many journalism
schools (esp. Columbia), one of the two best in the country (WCCO being
the other) is on the 6 and 10 PM news:
Tracy Rowlett--went to KTVT--now retired from there and in business for
himself
Iola Johnson--has worked sporadically at Ch. 8 but has been treated for
psychological issues
Troy Dungan (weather)--retired
Verne Lundquist (sports)--now at CBS
Now I look at Ch. 2; Dowdle is apparently cutting back his workload, while
I can only surmise that the station is grooming Jovita to replace Monica.
That leaves John Pruitt (who's got to be getting close to retirement) and
Glenn Burns.
With the breakup of the News 8 front four, and the strength of CBS in prime
time, KTVT often occupies the number one slot in the crucial 10 PM (CT) ratings.
So how long does anyone think Ch. 2's front four can hold, and if they're all gone,
say two or three years down the road, does that open the door for WAGA or WXIA
to take over the number-one slot in the crucial (for the Eastern time zone) 5 and 6
PM ratings?
