WCKG was on their backup transmitter today because they were installing the digital one. Which prompts me to a few observations and questions:
1) They only stream the local shows from 10:00AM to 9:00PM, would it be wise for them to replay those shows at night on their sub-channels?
2) The imaging is sounding better, by that I mean they got rid of the woman doing the id's. She sounded like she swallowed a carton of Pall Mall's. But will they continue with that lame "The Great One"? How about "1059 WCKG", keep it simple?
3) I really enjoy John & Jeff, IMO they are the best night-time talk show around (when Nick Digillio isn't on). O'Reilly isn't too bad on the radio (he should have gotten Kev's slot immediately) and Adam Corrolla is always great (too bad we probably won't get his morning show here).
How much will these syndicated shows play into the upcoming "new 'CKG" or "Howardless 'CKG"?
4) Mornings? Local/National? Naughty(Mancow)/Nice(Bob & Marianne)?
5) Subchannel? Newsradio 78 or THE SCORE? Good choice for downtown folks who are AM challenged? Music? Maybe do a harder edge Jack, more Rockin'. How about financial programs during the day? Maybe Bloomberg Radio or CBS Marketwatch.
OKAY, WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? Let's face it, the happenings at 'CKG are gonna keep us busy until the next few months. They were THIS CLOSE to flipping to JACK, considering Stever was the only asset they had at the time. But they were spared because Big Joel pannicked and JACKED 2 stations whose listenership was starting to grow old.
With that being said, they are experiencing a reneisance, Stan & Terry are really good, Pete's got that nice guy thing down pretty well and the nighttime syndicated shows are good (Phil Hendrie would be a better fit than O'Reilly, he should be on WIND or WLS, but at least he's on in Chicago).
They are in the catbird seat, with the new studios and the knowledge that there is life after Stern, are they using this time to their advantage so they can finally give us a Hot Talker worthy of Chicago.
