Classic Alternative

I checked out the Source a new classic alternative syndicated format that was launched today. I really think this format would do really well in phoenix. With the alternative history, KUKQ, KEDJ, KZON I Believe there would be an audience for this format. Now if only KZON went with this format when they blew up Free FM in lieu of the jamz format that they have now.

KZON really screwed up going rhythmic. The 12 plus numbers if i am not mistaken are below what kzon was when they were alternative.

KEDJ obviously thinks there's a future in its past; hence all those "Edge of the Nineties Weekend" stunts. It's probably not much of a coincidence that its ratings began souring as new management began giving fewer spins to alt gold during the week (while simultaneously amping up repeat spins of currents). It's probably not the only reason, though, either...

There are numbers from satrad suggesting that classic-alt is at least as popular as, if not substantially moreso than, its currents-based mainstream cousin. Granted, there's some self-selection going on here biasing the numbers to an extent, as satellite listeners have, for the most part, chosen to listen to pay radio because they want something that OTA casters aren't providing; there's bound to be more love for something different there than you'd find on terrestrials.

Nevertheless, XM's classic-alt XM54 regularly cleans the clock of its mainstream-alt sister station XM47 in 12+ Arbs with something like double its audience, while Sirius' fairly recent launch of a classic-alt SR24 kept ratings pace in '07 with longstanding and heavily-promoted rival SR21 in those same sat Arbs.

It would be so great if KZON went with a classic alt format and got some of the former Zone jocks for the lineup. This station I believe with some promotion would actually do very well. Hey the morning ritual is ready for am drive ;-) and I am sure Dead Air Dave could do PM drive

While I like and respect the guy, did Dave ever do any "time" (and I mean that in every sense) at the Zone?

Heck...I'd do overnights. I wouldn't have to be there AND I could spend glorious hour after hour listening to my dulcet tones......*sigh*

Well, Dead-Air is an extraordinary air talent. I guess he'll have to give up his live, in-studio announcing gig for Voice to America.

For the record, a certain working PHX morning host had the classic alternative idea years ago. Charles, listen to him! He's right! AND - you should hire Mannion.
