classic country on AM

Yeah, that's KWKH.

As I understand it, KTNN, a class II-A on 660 run by the Navajos, features country music as well as a truckers program overnight and covers many western states.

WWL New Orleans (870) and KRVN Lexington , Nebraska used to do overnight country targeting truck driveers. Don't know what they're doing now.

50,000 watt 1180 WHAM in Rochester was running Truckin' Bozo overnights from Clear Channel co-owned WLW. I used to enjoy listening to the classic country he played but then he did away with the music and just seemed to babble on about right wing politics. Now WHAM just runs the flying saucer show like every other AM station on the dial.

1430 WIL-AM in St. Louis has a pretty good Classic Country format.

I've heard this station on line. While I agree they sound good, it's too bad their ratings are nothing to write home about. WMC-AM's performance is as bad if not worse.

Yeah, there's alot of political talk on his show, but I think he'll occasionally play music.

I don't know about that Nebraska station, but WWL now is doing Coast to Coast AM overnights.

WWL's trucking show (David Nemo and the Road gang) flew the coop to XM's Truckers channel right after XM really started.

If I remember, they used Bill Mack for a bit before as someone said, went with Coast to Coast AM that one of it's sister stations was airing for years in New Orleans already.

KWKH last couple of years has been using Steve Sommers and the Trucking Bozo network feed.. However there are people speculating what will happen to this signal as CC is in the process of selling this station to Texas based GAP broadcasting.

WBT Charlotte (1110) did too. Their signal reached the entire East Coast, though they couldn't broadcast westward (and still can't) due to KFAB Omaha.

I went to the mountains last week and I heard a station which called itself "Classic Hit Country". All the telltale signs of a satellite format were there. Of course, they had network news at the top of the hour and 30 minutes after the hour, and at the time I started listening they had local news, including the county commissioners' meeting. Not a lot of songs, but the songs they had were good.

On the way home, there wasn't a lot of news, but where did the country music go? It was nearly all crossover pop-style country. Including ... are you ready for this? "I'm Already There" by Lonestar!!! I don't want to hear Lonestar!!! That's why I'm listening to CLASSIC country.

I heard one station licensed to Elijay, GA that played classic country 6a-9a and southern gospel the rest of the day. I heard 3 spots for the same car dealership in an hour in one hour of AM Drive...and probably 12 minutes of news. In the evenings, it was an interesting music mix.

vchimpanzee: I'm guessing the station was using True Country from Jones radio. The other sat networks are ABC Real Country, which surely wouldn't play I'm Already There. Also Waitt Radio has their "customized" classic country feed...that's all I know of for 24/7 classic country

Real Country is worse than this. I haven't heard it in years, but unless they got better ...

well said ;)

Basically WWL didn't want to loose the roadgang..Sat radio offered more money and more potential audience to come there for Dave Nemo and the group hince the show ended... WWL was broadcasting Bill Mack for a while before deciding that it was better to broadcast sister station's "Coast to Coast" would be better at the station than the long line of trucking programs apparently.

Also WWL is owned by conglomerate Entercon, and not Clear Channel... but still Big radio at it's worst at times..

But yeah some of the better programs have been pulled off of the clear channels forever due to competition and sat radio...

WSM is the grandfather of stations.WWVA ,I miss, but I think their are still airing jamboree usa on saturday nights. In the 70's and 80's I enjoyed tuning in 1050 WHN,new york 1220 WSCR .WNTY 990 here in Connecticut where country radio died in 1978 when W104" WIOF" changed to Magic 104. ooh I was pisted off. and I.ve could not recieve WCTY in my area.so I had the bounce around the radio dail for 10 years until 1988 when WWYZ flipped to country ,but I was disapointed with their format at the time because they did not play many classic country tunes.I like to see ScottFM format like his brother JackFM take the radio airwaves.
