Classic Country

"Break Dancin' In The Cow Pasture" & "Heavy Metal Is What My Tractor's Made Of" LOL !

I think that's two of them new Country Rap songs. ;D

Should add that some Classic Country's pretty bad too. I still change the station whenever "He Stopped Loving Her Today" comes on.

I can understand, but The Possum still has a lot of fans. While it might be an urban legend, Jones supposedly remarked after recording that song a little over thirty years ago, "I know my career's in the toilet now. Nobody's gonna buy that depressing son of a bitch." In fact, it was so popular it revived his career.

Well, if the Wolf gets any deeeper in eras then they already are drifting...THEY will be a Classic country. Notice how well it's helping thieir ratings.

I heard George Jones say in an interview that he remarked that "no one is going to listen to that depressing thing" when he was asked to record it.

I'm a fan of his & that song was good for his career. It's just not one that I like.

Short story: One evening in the early 90's George Jones was eating at a steak house in the Ft. Worth Stockyards. When he found out that it was the birthday of one of the ladies in the group I was with, he walked over & wished her a happy birthday & kissed her on the cheek. She was a big fan of his. That made her day !

Sounds like I need to listen to The Wolf more. I listened to them a lot in the 80's & early 90's when they were K-PLEX.

just heard from a reliable source that chuck morgan, the public announcer for the rangers has some money backing and is looking into finding a frequency in the dallas area for a classic country station. morgan use to be an announcer at wsm and the grand ole opry.
my source believes the support comes from charlie pride and nolan ryan. apparently an idea that morgan floated by ryan and pride.
interesting.

97.1 KTHT-Cleveland/Houston is a terrible classic country station owned by Cox. They play the same 100 songs a day over and over.

1130 KWKH-Is a fine station but hasn'e been the same since Barney Cannon died.

650 WSM- Is the birthplace of country music and does a decent job, and I have listened to them on my radio at night in Dallas and in Tyler/Longview.

but

If you are near Tyler or Longview or have a computer 104.1 KKUS/The Ranch is the station. They have Tom Perryman on there from 9-11 and he worked with Jim Reeves, he was on the Opry back in the 1950's, and he booked Elvis on his first tour of Texas. Not to mention he discovered Johnny Horton and Floyd Cramer. Tom and The Ranch are pretty amazing.

And their ratings are down significantly in the latest PPM's. Perhaps the short playlist is finally starting to burn out.

Johnny Horton and Floyd Cramer.

And the station is by far the lowest billing of the original 25 1-A clears, and is somewhere below 20th in billing in Nashville... where the top biller racks up 30 times more revenue than WSM.

The little audience it has is predominantly over 65, and thus has nothing to offer advertisers.

Does it really matter Gleason?? We are talking about good classic country stations to listen to not their ratings. Why dont you go back to arguing with people about how Mexico is the land of milk and honey!

Formats only survive in larger markets as long as they produce sales results for the station owner.

Commercial radio has been around about 90 years, so I'm surprised you don't know this by now.

I know that full well I dont need to be talked to like an intern!

Perhaps you don't understand the situation with Gaylord and WSM. So I will explain it in terms that you can understand. Sales and ratings are not important to the group. They use WSM as a sales tool for the Grand Ole Opry which brings in an audience, when they come for the Opry they stay in the hotel. So they make far more money off of Class 1A Clear Channel 650 WSM then they would putting something like sports or talk on simply due to the revenue it generates with the Opry and the hotel. Now you have been educated.

The folks at Gaylord are smarter than to think that an AM brings in anyone. While WSM has the heritage, it is TV and the internet that sustain the Opry and its various businesses. In fact, WSM (AM) has a JSA... which should indicate the degree of interest they have in the station.

It was Gaylord, you may remember, that wanted to change the format of WSM some years back, only to back down due to the protest of many influential members of the community... people who obviously don't listen to the station anyway.

Most 1-A clears show up in multiple markets. I looked up a few, like WHO that shows in 5 markets. Or WSB, which despite a terrible signal, shows in tow markets. Or WGN that routinely makes the book in more than a dozen markets. WSB has not shown in another market for 6 years, and then it was a 0.7 in Florence, AL. That sure brings 'em in to the Opry.

I don't know how many of the 65+ crowd you can count on, since most of the country legends have died. A common complaint is The Opry is being taken over by the new young whippersnappers & their blasted rock-n-roll country trash. So the 65+ crowd is slowly being run out. Grandpa & Grandma aren't going to like the Keith Urban/Taylor Swift fashion show, if they've been lifetime Bill Anderson/Loretta Lynn fans.

So if new country is as popular as everyone says it is & all the cool kids are listening to it, the number of WSM listeners should soon go through the stratosphere. Smart biz move Gaylord.

And before someone says the young'uns won't listen to WSM AM - that's probably correct. But they'll stream WSM online to hear their idols.

interesting.

That would be interesting if that happens. I dont know what station they would be after.

Charley Pride was a partner in "Long-Pride broadcasting" in the 70's-80's and owned KEYN & KQAM in Wichita Ks and several radio stations in Texas back then.

Billy, didn't Charlie Pride have an interest in some stations in Oklahoma as well? I know Roy Clark did at one time, so the idea country performers owning stations is not a new one.

If I recall correctly Charlie Pride owned KAYC in Beaumont and KNUZ in Houston.
They were branded "Country Fresh".

KEYN & KQAM were top-rated adult contemporaries at the time, with the first being a 100kw FM.

The big country dog in that town was KFDI, 1070AM and 101FM.
