While it might be an urban legend, Jones supposedly remarked after recording that song a little over thirty years ago, "I know my career's in the toilet now. Nobody's gonna buy that depressing son of a bitch." In fact, it was so popular it revived his career.

Johnny Horton and Floyd Cramer.

Perhaps you don't understand the situation with Gaylord and WSM. So I will explain it in terms that you can understand. Sales and ratings are not important to the group. They use WSM as a sales tool for the Grand Ole Opry which brings in an audience, when they come for the Opry they stay in the hotel. So they make far more money off of Class 1A Clear Channel 650 WSM then they would putting something like sports or talk on simply due to the revenue it generates with the Opry and the hotel. Now you have been educated.

my source believes the support comes from charlie pride and nolan ryan. apparently an idea that morgan floated by ryan and pride.
interesting.
KEYN & KQAM were top-rated adult contemporaries at the time, with the first being a 100kw FM.billyg said:dallas bat girl said:just heard from a reliable source that chuck morgan, the public announcer for the rangers has some money backing and is looking into finding a frequency in the dallas area for a classic country station. morgan use to be an announcer at wsm and the grand ole opry.

That would be interesting if that happens. I dont know what station they would be after.
Charley Pride was a partner in "Long-Pride broadcasting" in the 70's-80's and owned KEYN & KQAM in Wichita Ks and several radio stations in Texas back then.
