Classic Hits 92.9 One-Year Anniversary

hv4everandever
The bottom line is this -- If any of you posters here have a problem with WBPM (or any station), either do something about it (which doesn’t mean posting nasty messages here) or stop complaining. Randy and his team have worked really hard to turn WBPM into a revenue generating station (which it hadn't been for a long time under Clear Channel) and, for a station that’s got practically no budget and operates in a non-rated county, they’re doing a great job.

hv4everandever ,
The whole point of this board is for people to express their opinions; it is our right, although we could do without the silly name calling. I am one of those who generally like WBPM but have criticized some of the songs played. However, I realize that most station PD don’t read this board, so in an attempt to do something about it I have e-mailed Randy Turner the following message.

Randy,
Overall I like your station, WBPM, and I listen to it most of the time .However I want to suggest something that could make it better. You bill the station as Classic Hits, yet WBPM plays more than a few songs I never heard of and was not hits. Perhaps you do this to expand your play list .I realize I will not like every song that any station plays ,but with the disappointing drop to a .9 in the 12+ Arbitron ratings , I think I am not the only one who dislikes these unknown clunkers . Of course since the demographic breakdown isn’t made public I could be wrong. However, I would like to hear less of the unknown music and more sixties pop hits that 92.9 play way too few of. If you switched some these songs around WBPM would still maintain the widest play list in the area and attract more listeners IMHO.

Nice sentiment. I'm sure he'll appreciate the email, but I think its the songs they play that WERE hits, that everyone knows that hurts them in reality. These are the same core songs WPDH has been playing for decades. That audience is a CORE WPDH audience. So the people that tune to WBPM as a choice INSTEAD of WPDH certainly don't want to hear the songs that PDH plays. Thats really the issue. Otherwise, WBPM is a pretty solid station.

Disney, why don’t you see if you can buy the sign, and hang it in your room? Perhaps with your vast knowledge about B94 you could even open a museum or something.

That's a good idea. maybe I should take the old sign and put it as a souvenir. That would make a petition to bring the station back on the air by the year 2010. ;D

Randy apparently does care about his listeners as I received a prompt response to my e-mails, twice, which is more than I can say for PD at other stations. Basically he said the current format is working for them especially in Ulster County and with their target Demographic. WBPM does not expect to do well in the Poughkeepsie meaningless 12+ book, as their signal fades quickly south of Poughkeepsie. He said he has received numerous comments similar to mine as well as the often mentioned here comparison to WCBS-FM. He said that he believes that if WBPM was simply to use WCBS-FM's play list instead of what they play now it would not work out well for 92.9. One thing that bothered me, and I said so ,was that he said in a few years the plan is to phase out all 60's music and begin playing some 90's songs instead . He stated most 60's songs are 'stale' so WBPM only plays a select few that are not.

Thanks for the info, MHVRadiofan.

I think that decision jives with the keeping the format tuned for the 25-54 demo.

I guess I'm not the norm though. I'm in my mid/late 20's... my absolute favorite music comes from the 60's - 80's

Good decision, ran- man, that will run it straight into the ground. Stale 60's?? Thats because he's playing the stuff thats beaten to death...thought this guy was supposed to know something about programming....it will sound like all the rest...whatta joke.....listen to cbs and find out how the real pro's do it...
