classic hits coming to entercom

Their new web site features a photo collage of the following artists:

Stevie Nicks
Huey Lewis
Paul McCartney

and

DIANA ROSS!

You would assume the Mount Rushmore of 94.1 KQK would feature core artists of the format.

When do we get to hear "Touch Me In The Morning" or "Theme From Mahogany?"

Brad survives but not as PD. Jerry Dean is PD. Brad is promotions director and DJ.

First hour:

Old Time Rock & Roll / Bob Seger (78)
September / Earth, Wind & Fire (79)
Satisfaction / Rolling Stones (65)
Life In The Fast Lane / Eagles (77)
Uptown Girl / Billy Joel (83)
Blinded By The Light / Manfred Mann (77)
Locomotion / Grand Funk (74)
Lady (You Bring Me Up) / Commodores (81)
Fame / David Bowie (75)
Feelin' Stronger Every Day / Chicago (73)
More Than A Woman / Bee Gees (77)
We Built This City / Starship (85)
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting / Elton John (73)

AWFUL slogan. Why not Q94 or Q94.1? What's up with this KQK silliness?

Well now Q107.5 wouldn't like that very much, now would they?

Point taken.

But even the ill-fated 94.1 The Buzz and Snap 94.1 had cool sounding slogans.

94.1 K-Q-K is a mouthful of nonsense.

Someone sent me a Twitter and asked me "What is Classic Hits?" Is this a name (Classic Hits 94.1) that listeners will understand and normal for the format?

K~

Hour 2:

Sister Golden Hair / America (75)
Vehicle / Ides of March (70)
Let It Ride / Bachman-Turner Overdrive (74)
Cars / Gary Numan (80)
If I Can't Have You / Yvonne Elliman (78)
Evil Woman / ELO (75)
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For / U2 (87)
You're The First, The Last, My Everything / Barry White (74)
Don't Stop / Fleetwood Mac (77)
Spirit In The Sky / Norman Greenbaum (70)
The Boys Are Back In Town / Thin Lizzy (76)
Billie Jean / Michael Jackson (83)
Listen To What The Man Said / Paul McCartney & Wings (75)
Expressway To Your Heart / Soul Survivors (67)

Stats from first two hours:

By Decades:

60s: 2
70s: 20
80s: 6

Oldest Song: Satisfaction / Rolling Stones (65)
Newest Song: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For / U2 (87)

R&B Songs: 4
R&B Percentage: 14%

60s or 70s Stax Or Motown: 0

Family-friendly virginity lost at: 2:16pm (Life In The Fast Lane - Unedited g**damn version)

I just drove by the stations on Ridgeway and noticed a line of people to get in the door. I called a friend in the building - they explained the line of people are actually business owners or advertising decision makers wanting to buy time for next week to support Steve's return to radio. OMG - Anybody at WMC-TV reading this? Get a crew out there. Memphis Entercom minds are genius!

Classic Hits ARE HERE!

Who did Karen tick off at 100 to get booted to the Single-A Farm Club station?

Did anybody else hear Karen's announcement at 8am today? I got the distinct impression she was not terribly enthused about making the jump.

I am sure we all wish Karen Perrin (the gal so nice it almost sounds like they named her twice) the best. It was a joy working with her years ago. Just a nice gal.

I doubt Karen ticked off anyone. In fact, I can't imagine her having any enemies whatsoever. Just an all around good soul.

She has to put on the good front I'm sure, but most likely this was a less than ideal move. Hope they treat her well.

I understand that many songs are multi-format.

But they have played five songs so far that should ONLY be heard on Classic Rock:

Life In The Fast Lane / Eagles
Let It Ride / Bachman-Turner Overdrive
The Boys Are Back In Town / Thin Lizzy
More Than A Feeling / Boston
Jesus Is Just Alright / Doobie Brothers

The RMS Titanic has left Southampton.

I agree about Karen. I just can't imagine why they are removing half of the only heritage part left of FM 100.

Anybody here get out much? I read a lot of radio boards here in NYC and we have a little station that is called WCBS-FM. I know because I work here. The streaming works just fine where I am. Maybe somebody needs to upgrade a processor?

I also know that Classic Hits is what people call this format and that lousy voice guy that you talked about is the same guy that Joe McCoy used here at CBS-FM and Joe knows a little about Classic Hits and Oldies. The music seems pretty good to me, and I have been on the air since this music was out there the first time.

You guys in Memphis have fun ripping on it but if I know Entercom they have a team that probably includes guys like Bill Pasha and Scott Mihallick producing the station. Don't underestimate what they know about doing any oldies format if any of you are actually still working. They have a lot of friends here and all over who will do whatever it takes to make sure that they win.

Me like the new sound coming out of my speakers. Its cool. I can't wait for mr steve and karen to get on with their new programming. when does the show begin> any ideas about the tunes...pop said it would be spinners and som sweet comodores and maybe rick james from the L7 square...I'm applying monday for a job doing weekends. maybe they need an assistent for karen...[EDIT]

[EDIT-vulgar content]

"Don't underestimate what they know about doing any oldies format if any of you are actually still working."

"Miss Marconi," huh? Interesting to see you've chosen to drop into of all places...the Memphis forum...to make your VERY first-ever post on this message board...and all the way from NYC. What an honor, or something to that effect.

I'm going to pretend your backstory and posturing is legit for a sec and respond to your sentence quoted above.

It's not that we underestimate what they know about doing an oldies format...it's that they/you OVERESTIMATE your connection with today's listening reality...and in particular...THIS market. It's not GROWING, it's shrinking. And "old, familiar hat" is not a format type.

Now, "Miss Marconi," if you need any further clarification you can send us your sister, "Miss Edison." Better yet, tell Steve he can just log in under his own name and try to prop himself up that way. I'm sure you follow him like a shadow...

If I were an advertiser, I'd save some money and just invite the listeners over for dinner.

Oh Lordy.... it's 12:21 a.m. and I just caught Brad -- "snappy" he wasn't, but he did trip over the call letters a bit. He also sounded like "tinny" (ok, folks, I'm a civilian, I don't know all the lingo so please don't hurt me!)... you know, the way the little podunk AM stations sounded back in the 60's. It may be a sound they're going for to make it "feel" more classic... let me sleep on it, I'll give you an answer in the morning.

However, and again, no throwing of tomatoes and cabbages, but I'm kind'a groovin' on the mix so far. Here's what I've gotten the past half hour here in the wee morning...

Doobie Brothers Take Me In Your Arms
Stevie Wonder Higher Ground
Grand Funk Railroad Some Kind of Wonderful
Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
Steely Dan Peg
J. Geils Band Centerfold
Fleetwood Mac Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)
Rare Earth Get Ready
Boz Scaggs Lowdown
Carl Carlton Everlasting Love
John Mellencamp Hurts So Good

With all due respect, Miss Marconi…

While I haven’t “ripped” on the new station (that’s just not my style, frankly), I can understand the skepticism of those who have. Despite the grand pedigree of the Entercom team behind this station, it is an unescapable reality that it was Entercom that allowed 94.1 to run for fully two years as Snap 94.1, which was practically unlistenable (as evidenced by the numbers).

It is also Entercom that had a disasterous second quarter and dropped to a new closing low on the NYSE yesterday. It is Entercom that is now valued by the public at just $53 million; that’s less than CBS paid for FM100 – right here in Lil Ole Memphis -- several years ago. It’s the same company that this week has been laying people off all over the country in what may be a vain attempt just to keep the lights on.

I wish Entercom and especially Steve & Karen the best with their new station. I am sure we all do. But, those who are a bit jaded by it all have some basis for their feelings.

To quote the late Cuthbert J. Twillie, "exactly."

One might also question the general idea of giving up a stable position elsewhere (especially in this economy) to join a company in Entercom's current situation.

It's entirely possible that a sudden, across-the-board directive from headquarters could upset this local boat at any time. Just because they changed format this week doesn't mean that they have any guaranteed length of free time to prove themselves. Look at some of the big retailers over the years who built massive new stores or spent millions remodeling old ones, only to close them a month or two later due to a sudden corporate change in direction.

Even assuming that doesn't happen, they have a long road ahead and the pie is not getting bigger. And they're not off to a particularly remarkable start. The best that has been said is that some of the music sounds good...but then again, listeners already have the perfect playlist. It's called an Ipod.

There is good reason why the majority here are not particularly optimistic about their chances for success.
