Classic Hits Needed

Just how long will it take for a smart Charlotte operator to figure out that the city has a need for an oldies based Classic Hits station? Clear Channel has done it in some markets, CBS wins across the country in some markets, and some independents are doing the same thing. Is there a need? Is there an operator who will take the plunge and reep the benefits? The PPM has clearly shown that the old diary methods were not necessarily that accurate but it appears that many of the broadcast operators are still holding on to the old diary thoughts. Somebody in Charlotte will wake up one morning and make this switch to ratings and revenue success.

They didn't even keep Classic Hits on WKQC-HD2, I heard it a few days ago and they've gone '70's.

For the best classic Hit's without commercials buy an iPod and about 600 of your favorite classic hits. Hit shuffle and you'll have a better radio station in your hand. Plus you won't have to sit through two 7 minute spot sets each hour.

I do believe oldies could do very well. Majic 94.1 had a very good rating before going religious.

I feel 102.9 and 104.7 are totally out of touch with the older generation... 102.9 seems to want to specialize in up tempo 80s lately..

What about folks who also like 60s and 70s? I'm 46,and I still love the pop. songs from the 60s and 70s....

Will 95.7 ever try the switch?

How old are you guys? This is a young city and classic hits is boring. I'm 39 and think 107.9 plays too much old music! 95.7 is practically classic hits. What do you guys want? Cheesey 70's pop? Load up your ipod or get satellite radio or a smartphone with Pandora, etc.

Hi Jim:
Enjoy your "youth" while you can. You'll be surprised how many folks' perceptions of you will change next year when you turn the Big 4-0. bwahahaha

Very true!

I'd listen to new music if it didn't suck so badly. There are a few good songs here and there but not many. It's mostly guys banging on guitars to make a buck.

Classic Hits is boring bacause the stations that play them only play the same 400 titles that everyone likes over and over till you can't stand them any more, mass appeal.

One man's cheesey pop is another man's comfort food for the soul.

I enjoy my XM Radio. The Bridge, 50's on 5, 60's on 6, 70's on 7, Watercolors, CNN, and some of the country channels. Some of the people on these channels are allowed to be very entertaining and informative.

There is a ton of good new music, but stations in Charlotte outside of the 1 urban, 2 CHR's and 2 country stations all play old overplayed music. 92.7, 95.7, 99.7, 102.9, 104.7 and 107.9 just live in the past. Charlotte needs a Hot AC or active rocker. I'm not a fan of active rock btw. Hot AC is so big in Canada and northern cities and there is alot of great new music being played on them, but here in Charlotte, nope. Just twang and hip hop. I have to get my new music online. As far as classic hits, I just don't get it. The music never changes. It's all out there. Load up your ipod and instant classic hits, tailored to yourselves. I have 1300 songs on my ipod. That's more music than most stations have in rotation. As far as my age...well guys, age is a behavior. If you try to not live in the past you'd be amazed how young you can feel. Don't get me wrong, I love to relive old memories from time to time, but not every minute of the day! Lol!

AMEN! I am so tired of every new artists using "Auto Tune" and "Vocoders" to make their voice sound cool and hip. I belive a lot of them use it because they just can't sing worth a lick.

Okay Jim, the living in the past thing. Just because a song is old does that make it bad? I discover new songs from the '40's and '50's all the time. They're new to me. As for the songs I already know, they are like old friends. It doesn't mean that I live in the past. If you listen to Classical music I guess you're living way in the past!

I like what Dick Clark said about music a few years ago when someone asked him if he liked today's music. He said, "I don't think they are making music today to appeal to the average 72 year old".

So for the most part count me out of Hip-Hop, Rap and auto tuned music. I doubt most people will remember the songs on the Hot A/C or Active Rock charts a few years from now. They just don't have the staying power.

Everyone will say "Isn't that Nickelback?" Or if it's a girl "Isn't that Lady Whatsherface?"

What format is 95.7? If it isn't oldies and it isn't classic hits what exactly is it?

That's a good question! I'd call it a form of Classic Rock. Not quite pure Classic Rock and not top 40 enough to be Classic Hits.

While we're on the subject what is WRFX? seems like they are more mass appeal than the average Classic Rock station. I like a lot of the songs they play and I'm not really a Classic Rock fan. That tells me something is wrong! How long can you keep playing Stairway? (which I really like by the way)

You may not believe this, but you have 1000 more songs than the "average" person has on their i-Pod...

Sometimes 95.7 will play an oldies song that is not defined as Classic Rock. I think the biggest issue is their motor cycle jingle.. It's gotten quite old..

That's the truth. WAVO has an amazing playlist. Too bad I don't tune in very often, but even their second signal in Concord isn't much help unless I'm going that way.

Actually, you'd be surprised. There's new stuff coming out all the time and America's Best Music plays some of it. If you're in northeast Charlotte you have to get away from power lines and have a really good antenna but it's on 1280. WAVO doesn't do a lot of new stuff and there are no DJs to tell you what it is, but it's there from time to time.

1280 am comes through in the mint hill area too ,when you are away from power lines and while the car is not running. Great music variety. They are called memories.. Too bad you have to waste alot of gas to really hear them well..
