Classic Rock Myrtle Beach

Rock 107 used to sound a mix between classic rock and newer stuff. They would play Shinedown, Thory Of A Deadman, etc. But now they gone straight classic rock against Wave 104.1 Which I do say they sound better then Wave.

In the latest 12-plus ratings, WKZQ is up and Rock 107 is down.

12+ ratings are pretty much meaningless. Nielsen releases these numbers to the general public because they tell us little about who is actually listening.
The give this information away because they can't sell it.
In my career, I've seen stations with huge 12+ numbers. They had very few listeners in the age groups which attract advertisers.

DavidEduardo might want to explain this (again).

"Classic rock that really rocks". I guess it's true. I was expecting the same thing as last year when it was "Everything that rocks" but nothing really new was being played.

The Beatles? Really?

And "The Joker" was played twice in one day.

It's funny to hear "Classic rock that really rocks" followed by a song that doesn't have a lot of energy.

I feel sorry for fans of the music they were playing. WKZQ can really rock at times, and then other times song after song sounds like AC or Hot AC and, while it sort of leans rock, it seems almost rhythmic.

Couple things:

1- Best classic rock station in the country is KSHE 95 in St Louis. They play the 90s grunge, 80s hair bands, 70s over played hits and deeper prog rock and singles you haven’t heard in a while. They get as old as Cream and Buffalo Springfield while still playing Pearl Jam.

2- KZQ is NOT a rock (or active rock) station. KZQ is alternative. Best way to explain the difference between the two formats is to look at the 80s. The hair bands were on what we would call active rock today and Depeche Mode and DramaRama and even Sex Pistols or The Clash would be alternative.

3- I’m still perplexed on how we define:
Classic Rock
Mainstream Rock
Active Rock

Active rock does play classic rock though leans new (post 2000). I personally see mainstream rock and classic rock stations very similar. Mainstream will be more 80s/90s focused and hits bassed. Focuses on Kiss and less on The Eagles. Classic rock focuses more on the 70s and 80s with a broader/wider playlist. You will hear Kiss but you will also hear The Eagles. You will hear Black Sabbath but you will also hear Fleetwood Mac. Mainstream Rock are those god awful man up stations iheartradio has. Basically nothing post 2010 and little 2000 to 2010 with a large focus on 80s and 90s with some 70s mixed in. Very hit based and hard.

On another site I saw that Rock 107 has returned to a mix of active rock with some classics. I checked their web site to see if they showed the last song played and the first one I saw was by korn. The second was by Tom Petty. That sounds about like what they were doing before.

I do not believe this. I was adding to the Wikipedia article about Bill Norman's former station, and I decided to look at the article on WNMB to see what had been said there, probably by me.

It's not like Myrtle Beach needs another classic rock station. Although WNMB would hardly reach the entire market.

Interestingly, the name The Drive was one I had thought would be a good one for WODR, the beach music station, if it had moved to North Myrtle and taken over WNMB when that station was off the air. WODR didn't stand for "Ocean Drive" but that's where it would have been. It would have never competed with The Surf, but I thought what the market really needed was something comparable to what WEZV used to play. The time to switch to that format would have been after WEZV made its recent major change. Instead, WODR went Christian and gave up those letters.

The thing with Active Rock Radio in this area, is there is a lack of a market. I believe my internet streaming radio station is the only active rocker in this area and even it struggles to get people to tune in.

The best places for the Active Rock markets are Charleston and Columbia and Until the ratings from the Spring and Summer books reflect that it needs one, it's just going to get buried and lose money.

And for those keeping track, we have a total of:
4 Country Stations
2 Classic Hits stations
2 Classic Rock Stations (Although Rock 107 is playing tunes from the 90s and early 2000's. those can be considered classic rock.)
2 Hot AC/CHR
2 Sports Stations
1 News/Talk Station
1 Easy Listening
1 Alternative Rock
1 Urban/Hip Hop and R&B

Just thought of something. Bob plays "anything". Where does that go? I was assuming The Surf was one of the "classic hits" stations, though it's more oldies, and leans heavily R&B.
