Classic Top 40 B1079 now Big Hits

Back to original topic:
It's one of the more interesting frequencies in Columbus. I like their reach in music now. I'd name my other favorite frequencies but I'd get flamed.
Is there any more exciting station to listen to right now? Ted kept you off balance, WODB is doing that now; at least for me.

I'm with you 100%, although I hesitate to say that because I'm still rooting for the (admittedly slim) possibility that non-comm 91.5 will keep its current music. (That hesitation is irrational of course, because what I say here has an infinitesimal chance of affecting 91.5's final direction.) Besides the fact that I like the music mix on both stations a helluva a lot (and your ODB "off-balance-like Ted" observation really hit the nail on the head), the fact is that ODB has one of the crappier signals in town. One crappy signal vs. one decent signal but in the non-comm band. Sigh. Can't we get something good on big commercial signal? I wonder if Saga has any plans to move ODB to the Grandview move-in? I kind of doubt it... Also, as I've said before, Ted's final ratings on 103.9 would actually extrapolate to better AQH than the Blitz is now eaking out on 99.7. But we know that kind of switch is never going to happen.

Sorry for rambling away from the original point, which is that I fully agree with your assessment of the current ODB.

I gotta totally agree with V. Riley about Star 107.9 doing 80's right. For example they played "Sausalito Summernight" by Diesel which got as high as 35 on Billboards Top 40 then disappeared. You ain't gonna hear that on any Jack/Fred/Bob/Max station. The variety of 80's Top 40 is what got me hooked listening to them out here in the Bay Area.

B107.9/ 91.5 WHKC/ 98.9 WMMO

"Sausalito Summer Night" by Diesel was played on the Big 89, WLS Chicago back in the day. I haven't listened to 107.9 in a while, but since Ted FM went away, I've been listening to 91.5 which has a pretty decent variety of music.

Hopefully this won't offend anyone, but I think of 98-9 WMMO sometimes when I'm listening to 91.5 because I get the same feeling when I'm listening. Most stations have one or two token "wow" songs, but 91.5 has lots of them, just like WMMO did.

We would be better off if the Inventor had a signal in this market, but what owners fail to appreciate is that a station like WMMO takes a while to build an audience. Cox didn't give 107.3 the Bay enough time to mature. People who really like music have found other alternatives today. Sad but true.

I have heard "Sausalito Summernight" by Diesel many, many times on WMMX/Mix 107.7 Dayton, usually on Jeff Stevens' "Time Warp Cafe" weekday request show...You can also hear Planet P's "Why Me" on there as well, which hit no higher than #64...Also Saga's "On the Loose" from '83 as well.
Anyhow, Kevin is right on his post...dead on. I am a big fan of 80s alternative music, but how many other people out there want to listen to songs like "Stand or Fall" by The Fixx besides me? BTW Kevin, what were those ratings on "The Deep End" back in your STAR days? You have to give Kevin and STAR credit where credit is due...at least they GAVE you guys alternative 80s music...STAR was a great station no doubt about it...STAR was one in a million. Great station, great jocks, LOTS of great music and fun. I was just listening to an old tape of them a couple of days ago and I was blown away...EVERYONE that worked there had a passion for the station...You could hear it coming through the speakers. I also seriously doubt 91.5 will stick with 80s(We can all hope though, can't we?), especially since the signal is non-comm.

Sausalito Summernight, now that is a song I haven't heard 91.5 play. I'm surprised 91.5 hasn't announced what format they are going with. Come to think of it, I wonder if WODB would play Sausalito Summernight now that they are doing some 80s. Well, enough talking about the song. I'm going to play it now just to get it out of my head. ;)

I know this thread has gotten a bit off-topic, but, my wife and I have heard "That Thing You Do" a few times on 91.5. It's the only station in town, or anywhere, that I've heard play it.

Just an interesting footnote.

If it's the "That Thing You Do" by The Wonders, that was out in 1996. I've also heard EMF's "Unbelieveable" on 91.5 as well, which was out in 1991. They must be slipping in a few 90s tunes here and there. Anyhow, "That Thing You Do" was a Top 40 hit in 1996 and I remember hearing it on WNCI back then. Good song.

For the record: The Deep End, for the most part, did pretty well for us. Frankly, it was our way of being able to play some of the alternative songs that just didn't test well for us and give the station what I like to call "illusion of depth."
And I admit, I stole the program's name from the 80's channel in Chicago, which did a similar feature. (I wanted to acknowledge this in case Chris Shebel, who was PD there, ever read this.)

By the way, if you have some tapes of Star, you might want to contact Vince Riley at star1079.com...I'm sure he'd be
very interested in getting a copy.

I second that, of course. ;)

Had I known STAR 107.9 was going to flip, I would have been taping it 24x7 until it happened. Of course as Kevin has pointed out to me in our e-mail conversations, stations hardly ever announce they are going to change format. Thanks Kevin!

8) Cool! Thanks for the reply Kevin. Star was fun while it lasted...I still miss it. :'( Glad that "The Deep End" did well for you guys...What a cool-and different-show. That old tape of Star I was listening to the other day was a shift that Deborah George did(It was an overnight because she said "The Breakfast Club with Jason and Kelly" was coming up). This must've been sometime in 1999.

i didn't record one minute of Star 107.9 either. i LOVE the 80's and just assumed the station would be around forever. but when they couldn't afford to pay their phone bill and guys came to repossess the automation PC while on the air, you know it's only a matter of time. :'(

don't forget guys, you can STILL listen to Star 107.9 thanks to the internet...

Long Live Great 80's Music!!!

Believe it or not, star1079.com is now under the financial gun again. The Copy Right Royalty Board back on March 2nd voted to increase the rates that Internet Broadcasters pay for performance royalties (this is more than Satellite, Cable or AM/FM pay), not to mention the CRB made the fees retro active back to 2006. No fear that the phone, or automation PC will be taken, but the streaming provider maybe forced out of business in STARs case, as for other internet radio stations, they may go bankrupt. You can read about it in the Dispatch at this link.

That's Jake Sommer's picture in the article (who used to work at STAR 107.9).
