Classic WBNX from 1989!

Ahh, yes...

Nice little trip down memory lane back when the ol' double nickel was rolling merrily along as Ernest Angley's quaint little family station.

Remember how they used to bleep out even the tamest of cuss words?

These days, WBNX looks like every other cookie cutter CW station (save the daily "90 & 9 Club" airing).

They don't even bleep out swear words anymore.

I remember the cut-out audio. It got quite annoying to the point of censorship. I bet Ernest Angley is slowly easing up on 55. He probably though still not happy about having The Ninety and Nine Club broadcast only once a day instead of twice.

The promos are better than anything 55 is doing these days. Their new fall lineup has an "I've seen better" approach to me.

I wish WBNX would revert to identifying themselves by their call letters, not unlike most Tribune-owned CW outlets (WDAF/Dallas is "The 33," KWGN/Denver is "The Deuce," WPIX/New York reverted to "Pix 11," and KTLA and WGN).

Never have been a fan of the "CW" name or their network standardization.

Since they became a WB/CW affiliate, they've lightened up quite a bit on the censoring.

More than likely, it's because the network shows are contractually required to air as is, and the same probably holds true for all the syndicated shows they have.

"90 and 9" airs multiple times a day on 55.2, so if you need a Rev. Angley fix, there you go.

They brand themselves as "WBNX-The CW", so they do use their call letters.

I think 55 is lucky they've become a major player in Cleveland. What really helped them was the CBS-FOX switch back in 1994. With FOX going to 8, CBS going to 19 and many shows going to 43, FOX Kids needed a home and 55 was able to carry them. That alone put the station on the map. Afterwards followed The WB and now The CW, not to mention overtaking 43 in the process and acquiring better shows.

Oh, there's no doubt.

The 1994 affiliation swap turned the entire market upside down. Even for 3 and 5, which saw no affiliation changes whatsoever.

5 was basically a sitting duck as staff departures hurt them badly (not to mention losing the prime 8AM slot for "Morning Exchange" due to a new Scripps-wide affiliation agreement with ABC). And now, they lost both the Ohio Lotto AND Oprah... and will lose "Wheel of Fortune" and Jeopardy! next September.

3 basically had nowhere to go but up, and took advantage of losses by 5, 8... and especially 43, after they lured away Romona Robinson. They went from being one of the weakest affils/O&Os for the strongest broadcast TV network in the US... to being one of the strongest affils for the weakest broadcast TV network in the US.

Would that make WOIO the early 90s WKYC? :D

There is no network affiliate in all of Northern Ohio (maybe even the whole Great Lakes region) as outright putrid as WNWO TV 24 in Toledo (NBC).

Their news operation makes 19 Action News look like the Taylor/Swoboda/Goddard/Coleman glory years at channel 8 in comparison.

Probably the worst network affiliate in the entire country is Sinclair ABC affiliate KNDL/30 St. Louis. Since 2001, KDNL has had no news department of any sort (Gannett's KSDK/5 provides re-purposed 6/11 news weeknights) and they are one of the lowest-rated stations in the entire market. It's only because Sinclair and ABC have an otherwise decent relationship that KDNL is still affiliated.

The worst-run network O&O likely is WTVJ/6 Miami. NBC has treated WTVJ pretty much the same way they treated WKYC in the 70s and 80s. It ranks below several of the independents, netlets, and their sister Telemundo O&O (the latter actually isn't surprising, if you think about it).

And I'd be remiss not to mention long-bankrupt Granite ABC affil WKBW/7 Buffalo.

I'll defer to you about the other stations (though WKBW sure did beat that music bed on their newscasts to death didn't they). But I know WNWO well, because I split my time betwen Cleveland and Port Clinton, and P.C. is considered part of the Toledo market.

Imagine Hammer, Ned, and a fresh batch of OCB graduates running a nightly newcast...that's channel 24 in a nutshell.

WTOL (11-CBS), WTVG (13-ABC) both have solid news teams, and even WUPW (36-Fox) has nothing to be ashamed of.

But NBC 24...blech!

Looking at those snippets on You Tube, WKBW may not be anything to write home about, but it's still way better then WNWO.

I didn't realize that WNWO recently went through one of the worst re-branding efforts I've ever seen.

Good Lord.

That has to be the worst TV imaging package I've ever seen on an alleged top 100 market station.

It manages to be both cheesy and generic at the same time.

From the block logo with the WNWO calls at the bottom (and what is it doing in the news open, being submerged in Alka Seltzer??) to the overuse of the graphic moving "AND" between news teases...it makes one scream for the old package, which wasn't that good in the first place.

Another thing..They need to come up with "Action 24" "News 24" or even NBC 24 in the on air audio..WNWO is already a pretty hard bit of call letters to say once, let alone half a dozen times in 5 minutes during a newscast..

I was in St. Louis earlier this summer and was flipping thru channels. It was surreal seeing an "ABC 30" logo over Simpsons reruns at 5PM while the other network affiliates were running their local news.

Mind you, I stuck with The Simpsons rerun over the local news, so maybe they're onto something...

Also...WEWS is losing Wheel and Jeopardy next September? Where are they going?

The entire Scripps chain declined to renew both shows. It's not just WEWS that's giving both shows up next year; EVERY Scripps-owned station that carries them will have to do the same.

Of course, their largest station, WXYZ/7 Detroit, never carried either show in the first place.
