Classic WBNX from 1989!

WOIO must be really thrilled to land "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" Both shows are HUGE upgrades from anything they've had the past, including "Millionaire." I think those shows will boost the station big time. Maybe "Action News" will finally have a decent audience.

It will be interesting to see what WEWS fills in the 7-8pm slot next year. The station has already seen a lot of changes on daytime with network and syndicated shows.

I think "Access Hollywood" would be a good bet, seeing as channel 8 has burried it at 2 a.m. and doesn't even carry the weekend edition.

Maybe they'll kinda go off the board a little and expand the 6 p.m. news to an hour and push "World News Tonight" to 7 p.m.

It also depends what kind of new syndicated stuff is out there for 2012-13.

They have options, but whatever they do, they'll take a hit, as "Wheel" and "Jeopardy" are still juggernauts in that time slot

That's my early bet. (And just a guess, as I've heard nothing out of 3001 Euclid about their post-"Wheel"/"Jeopardy" plans.)

IMO, it wouldn't be a bad idea for WEWS to expand the 6pm news to an hour. (Tagging on a 7pm local newscast would be too much going up against both WJW and WKYC.)

I remember the cut-out audio. It got quite annoying to the point of censorship. I bet Ernest Angley is slowly easing up on 55. He probably though still not happy about having The Ninety and Nine Club broadcast only once a day instead of twice.

The promos are better than anything 55 is doing these days. Their new fall lineup has an "I've seen better" approach to me.

I still hear them muting out minor swear words today, although not as much as before. I hear that sometimes on Cops reruns that air at 4AM, but not on every episode. I also have numerous episodes of Real TV and Maximum Exposure on VHS back when they were on that station circa 2000-2002, and heard them mute out swear words frequently on those shows as well. Surprisingly, however, when Everybody Loves Raymond started out on the station, the censors never touched anything on there.

The irony is that WBNX will do that, but they'll also air commercials for racy adult chat lines like Nightline, Quest, Live Links, Lavalife, etc. in the late night hours. Go figure.

It all depends on the contract for the particular show. If the show must air "As is", then 55 can't touch it.

And in recent years, TV 55 has been run more secularly than in the past. Since becoming "big time" (i.e. having Fox Kids fall into their laps) WBNX has brought in more actual "TV people" to run things (both in programming and sales), rather than ministry types, so if you wonder why Niteline ads are now seing the light of day, now you know.

Why in the world would 55 pick up a show like Cops just to edit minor curses? Can't have viewers hear the word "hell" after a domestic disturbance with visible injuries, I guess...

WBNX seems like they're slowly backing off their editing ways from back in the day. I wouldn't be surprised if "The Ninety and Nine Club" goes off the main feed, moving completely to one of the subchannels (which could be what WBNX was when they first went on the air).

I do think they should plug sitcom reruns between 12 and 2 in the afternoon as opposed to Law and Order: CI reruns. This is how I picture it:

10am The People's Court
11am E! True Hollywood Story
12pm Cops
12:30pm classic sitcoms (between 12:30pm and 3pm)

I've been imagining shows like "The Cosby Show," "A Different World," "Roseanne," "Cheers" (which 55 already airs), and "Married...With Children" in that block, and it would be a huge improvement over the past few years, especially the sitcoms they've aired over the years. It would be a throwback to when WOIO did their "laughternoons" block before they switched from FOX to CBS.

I will say that WBNX has come along way from even ten years ago when they were airing reruns of "Clueless," "Moesha," "Suddenly Susan," and some show called "City High."

In 2000-2001, 55 was just starting to hit their stride as a big boy station, but 43 was still the big daddy when it came to syndie fare. In fall 2001, 55 snagged "Everybody Loves Raymond", which was the big syndie "get" that year, and to this day it still does well for them. That established them as a player for top-shelf syndie fare. And that last show you mentioned was actually called "City Guys"...it was an NBC Saturday morning teen show (a modified copy of "Saved by the Bell") that had reached enough episodes for syndication.

55 probably picked up "Cops" on a barter basis...costs them nothing to air, but in exchange they have to air the national commericals that come with it.

As far as the censoring goes...old habits die hard. They censor what they can, and what they can't, they grit their teeth and bear it.

I get that. It just strikes me as antiquated. Like that #1 Eminem song from last year where all the top 40 stations aired the verse about him tying his girlfriend to the bed and setting their house on fire, but they wouldn't dare air the fleeting curse word in that lyric.

But it's their channel. They can do what they like. They seem to do alright. :)
