Today, Clear Channel Worldwide issued a statement to the press that it has decided to lay off Clear Channel as a whole to keep in line with their "Less is More" campaign.
The move, described by Lowry Mays, says that in order for CC to run its business responsibly, they need to make some changes in all of their markets. "From this point on, we have come up with a system to operate more effectively. I will handle voice tracking at all of our 1200+ stations, Mark will handle all promotions and Randall will be the sales guy. By streamlining all of this, it will allow us to better serve our audience and advertisers as a whole. This new system will set us apart from the competition, and allow us to maximize our profits, while keeping a happy workplace for our "employees". As a "Thank You" to everyone let go, we will be mailing you limited edition bobble heads of me and the boys. Clear Channel also said it plans to sell all of its buildings and move the operations into their San Antonio Mansion. "Who needs buildings and studios? After all, there are only 3 of us now. We will work together out of 1 office, further maximizing our profits before the sale goes through."
When asked how Lowry would handle voice tracking for so many stations and the format differences that they have, his response was "Well, Whoopi was our test for that. She seemed to do ok. She was on a few different formats across the country, and our audience didn’t all turn it off! I plan on taking it to the next level. Radio is radio is radio. You don’t need to be local....we have proven that for years now."
The move, expected to save Clear Channel over $500,000,000, comes after constant layoffs for the past 2 years. New Global Promotions Director Mark Mays said "By being "the guy" I feel that I can take some great ideas I have and really make them work...like my new all format bumper sticker that just says "I Love My Clear Channel Station". I mean come on...do you know how much $ we can save by making 1 bumper sticker for all of the company to use?? Anyways, how hard is it to over see a promotions department that doesn’t have a budget?
Worldwide Director of Sales, Randall Mays added "Hey, who doesn’t want to advertise with us? We are the biggest and the best. Why are we paying sales people to write up paper work? The product sells itself. Just this afternoon I had lunch with The Burger King and we did all the deals nationwide. E-A-S-Y! Who needs people??
Outgoing President John Hogan regrets coming up with the "Less Is More" idea. "I had no idea that it would eventually eliminate ME out of the mix. This wasn't what I envisioned, but I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles."
