Clear Channel at it again...

"live air talent"? Highly doubtful. There would be no cost saving whatsoever with that model. I believe they are VT'd as well, with directive to add one break per hour or so to each station they're on with the station's actual call letters. Otherwise, you hear what I heard on 93.3 last weekend, "Dean Martin on your Christmas station!"

hahaha the only thing "live" about PC voice tracks is they are coming out of a hard drive in a closet on 5th Ave at the time their scheduled... Otherwise their recorded in advance and they are generic not tagging station calls / slogans...

Just think people used to complain about Vt's sounding 'local' and 'faking it'... oh how times have changed.. They don't even try to sound 'local' anymore. But it's business and all about improving the bottom line just like any business.

If listeners realized how taken for granted they were and stopped listening, that wouldn't improve the bottom line.

Yes, it's business, but what about cutting the salaries of some of CC's upper management instead of getting rid of entire air staffs at a time? Eventually, CC will have no air talent & will have every station PC. Remember that WKRP episode where they did their take on "A Christmas Carol" where they go into the future & the only person working at 'KRP was ol' Herbert R. Tarlek? That's the direction CC is headed.

Oh yeah, that episode was very prophetic, wasn't it?!  Even the near-Christmas aspect. Just last night I was watching a KRP episode where Andy had to cajole a reluctant Les Nessman into *expanding* the news staff.  Can you imagine?

Hey at least consider the traffic on CC Stations till earlier this year lucky. pending except Hub Markets. Every Market's Reports were from moniters in other Cities. Save the CC Stations. any station that took traffic from Metro Traffic Service got their traffic out of Detroit for at least 4 years

That episode is entitled "Bailey's Big Break" IIRC. What I can't believe is a Top 40 station in 'KRP actually had a news staff..but then again, it was normal in those days.

WCOL had one of the largest radio news staffs in the city at the height of their top 40 days.

Chuck,

Any thoughts an why CC Columbus let http://www.wcol.com/pages/pp_johnboycrenshaw.html
go? I was under the impression he was doing an excellent job over at WCOL. Does being a good
PD and having a very good book even matter these days as far as job security goes?

Also, will you be back on the air anytime soon?

I have no clue why he was demoted from cluster manager a year ago (although I have my suspicions that he was paying for the sins of another) and i have no idea why, when the station is (was) doing so well under his supervision, he was let go now. JB and I had a "strange" relationship. I really liked the guy as a guy. I could sit down and have a beer with him anytime. As a management person, I was disappointed that he didn't "get" me. It seemed that he had the opinion that if it's not on my resume, I must not be able to do it. I told him then that he was wrong and I stand by that...but I DO like him. Being a good person, being good at your job, being loyal to the station and the company, being liked by your colleagues, playing hurt, being dependable, always willing to go above and beyond to get the job done...all that stuff that I grew up thinking made someone valuable doesn't come into play anymore. It's dollars, nothing but.

Amy, Andy and Kevin...their story makes me sad. The station has been seeing an increase in listeners, so CC dismantles it. From a corp level they think that nobody cares about the talent. As long as the music is there, people will listen. I have exchanged messages with Kevin. He is handing it very well and it doesn't hurt that he has other income. He is a very philosophical young man with a good attitude. Andy...I don't know about. Amy is a princess of a human being. As soon as her non-compete runs out, Sunny should be sending her roses.

As for me returning to the air...I continnue to stay connected and to be as positive as possible - which isn't easy - and to make sure nobody thinks I'm dead. I thought I had something a few weeks ago, only to be told I was "over qualified" which broke my heart. I would have taken the job and done everything i could to help the station succeed, but definitions of "success" vary greatly these days. I'm staying connected to the audience through the FB page, so if I do get back, I have at least a few people that will be there to listen! I'm proud to say that when I left the air on 3/29/12 I had 1150 FB fans and today I have 1139. Not bad for a guy that became invisible. Those people keep me going far more than they know. I love hearing from them and "almost" talking to them, even without the mic.

In the meantime, I am trolling for clients and continue to sell real estate. We'll see what 2013 holds.

BTW - I got a call from Cannon yesterday. He said to tell Columbus HI so consider yourself HI'd!

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Joel Riley mentioned all the staff changes at CC Columbus today. This is when he was chatting with the WTVN newsman at about 5:40 AM this
morning.

I had a conversation with one of the CC sales slugs who has been in radio sales for under a year and she says to me "it's just what you sign up for when yo play a big boys game..." I wanted to beat the hell out of her but remembered, she's a little easy, 20-something, hot and Joel Riley and Corby's only hope of keeping their job!

I've seen projections where CC needs to increase revenue company wide by at least 4% each of the next 3 years to be able to make the note...many of the "Professionals" CC has hired to do sales have no idea they are part of a throw it up against a wall to see what sticks test...that isn't 4% over the next three years, that is 4% EVERY YEAR...get ready for the ads to hit the airwaves for the next cattle call for sales professionals. :-\
You think hiring 5 salespeople with e hope tat one will be a keeper is new? It was hat way when I started over 35 years ago.
