CLEAR CHANNEL GUILLOTINE STILL WORKS

Glad that things worked out for you Bubba Bob!

Hey does anyone think that someday, someone with some money will come along and start up a radio organization that will run things like the old days? What I'm asking is could there/can there ever be a local station that would be independent, run a 24/7 on-air staff, etc.? Or are those days definitely gone... ???

OK, OK. The big radio corporations waaay overpaid for the stations during the 90's consolidation feeding frenzy. Now they are in debt up to their eyeballs and have to cut every conceivable cost to pay their creditors. I get that. But do they have to be so inhuman about it?

Back about 30 years ago I worked for two guys who owned a station in York. Regulars on this board know who I mean and they had a deserved reputation as being not the nicest people. But when they fired me, they, at least in a couple of small ways, tried to help me out. They promised not to fight my unemployment. (unneeded because I got a new job within 2 weeks) They released me from my non-compete, allowing me to get a job anywhere I was offered one. They offered to let me use their production room to make airchecks. And they allowed me to use the station's "gig box" of duplicates of current records for a couple of parties I had booked in the weeks right after my firing.

Contrast this with the "big corporate" way of firing someone. You are called into the office, handed your walking papers and quickly escorted off the property by security....in many cases after 20 or more years of outstanding service in which you helped the company bill millions of dollars! Would it cost a lot extra to be a litte human? Help a veteran broadcaster find another job? Offer him an opportunity elsewhere in the company, maybe even for less money? I'm sure many would take it and be grateful. No wonder so many people hate corporate America!

Its why I have always chosen to work for smaller "Mom and Pop" operations. Fire me if you must, but at least treat me like a human being after I've busted my ass to do a good job for you!

Ray, you and I know that the companies that own radio stations are losing money due to other listening avenues and that will never change. It seems like the only live dayparts anymore are morning and afternoon drives and the part timers they hire are HORRIBLE! Kids right out of school who can't pronounce city names or artist names! Radio as we know it is dead....the funeral will be announced soon!

Well said Ray, what more could anyone add. So sad to see the business fall to where it is today. True-there is a lot to say about the mom and pops that still exist today. You are doing and have done extremely well with filling that home town niche with WIOO. Harold should be smiling. Keep up the great job!

That's why unions were [and still are] needed - to combat corporate capitalism and greed.
"At willl' employees
- doesn't have a nice ring to it.
I will not be listening to certain radio stations because of their greed. I'm educated and not easily fooled.
My heart goes out to Larry K. Scott, Jeni Gipe and a few others recently fired for being too professional and loyal.

Seems like the more you give to a place, the more they want to dump your salary. These stations may save a few bucks short term but I have to imagine it waters down the product on the air and can ruin listener loyalty.

There is NO listener loyalty anymore. The FCC should have NEVER allowed Cumulus to buy more stations. They are in debt and yet still able to pull this off??? Sorry not biting. Clear Channel and Cumulus have dumbed down the product in Central PA. Firing top notch talent and voice tracking most o all their shifts. People are now running in droves to satelite radios and mp3 players. Radio my friend, is dead.

What about the 270 million people who DON'T listen to Sirius XM?

And in case you haven't heard, the public doesn't care about DJs. As long as they hear their favorite songs and the contests, they'll keep listening.

Multiplexor: I'm a wannabe? Of course. So is everyone here. We "wannabe" successful in radio, or at least what passes for radio in the year 2011. Amazing you're only recognizing this now. Besides, I'm still in the biz, albeit essentially as a hobby. Of course, my hobby puts my wannabe voice on KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia. Don't know if you've ever heard of that station, but it's a pretty good one. (By the way, Philadelphia is a city in southeastern Pennsylvania.)

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE JOKE THE WAY THE RIVER 97.3 HAS BEEN BUTCHERED UP LIKE MEAT THRU A GRINDER!!!! I WAS IN RADIO FROM 1978-2008// AND FOUND THE STATION TO BE ONE OF THE BEST IVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!! CHRIS TYLER HAD THAT STATION TOTALLY ON TRACK, CLEAR TO THE POINT, AND TOTALLY PROFESSIONAL. TO AXE HIM, AND FROM WHAT I HERE JENI GIPE IS TOTALLY CRAZY. SHE WAS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST FEMALE VOICES EVER HEARD WITH MY TIME IN THE BIZ. LETS JUST HOOK UP I-PODS, OR I-TUNES TO TRANSMITTERS AND BE DONE WITH IT. RADIO IS A JOKE NOW!

You don't have to YELL. Please turn off the "caps lock"
I agree, the River was a very good station. That's why I have Sirius. I know what I'm getting.

I'm a little confused by something. You have left The River 97.3, because it has gone from being live to more voicetracked, to listen a satellite service that is almost completely voice tracked. And even know there are more and varied channels, each channel probably has less variety than the River.

The River has not been live (voicetracked) for a long time. They might be there "LIVE" but the voice is not.
You are right. I want more from local radio then it can give and if look at the ratings, income and community involvement I guess I'm not alone.

Anyone know if Rich Hill is safe from all of this craziness? Did he get all the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre stations dumped in his lap when they blew Phil Glaloso out up there?

I agree with Rock. Why PAY for radio? I know many people who got a trial subscription to Sirius/XM. When the trial was over, they decided not to renew. It can be a novelty at first....then the reality sets in. There is just as much repetition with the music and...for the most part...even more voicetracking. Due to today's technology, it would be foolish not to voicetack. I guess the bottom line is...voicetracking is here to stay. Why pay for it?
