OK, OK. The big radio corporations waaay overpaid for the stations during the 90's consolidation feeding frenzy. Now they are in debt up to their eyeballs and have to cut every conceivable cost to pay their creditors. I get that. But do they have to be so inhuman about it?
Back about 30 years ago I worked for two guys who owned a station in York. Regulars on this board know who I mean and they had a deserved reputation as being not the nicest people. But when they fired me, they, at least in a couple of small ways, tried to help me out. They promised not to fight my unemployment. (unneeded because I got a new job within 2 weeks) They released me from my non-compete, allowing me to get a job anywhere I was offered one. They offered to let me use their production room to make airchecks. And they allowed me to use the station's "gig box" of duplicates of current records for a couple of parties I had booked in the weeks right after my firing.
Contrast this with the "big corporate" way of firing someone. You are called into the office, handed your walking papers and quickly escorted off the property by security....in many cases after 20 or more years of outstanding service in which you helped the company bill millions of dollars! Would it cost a lot extra to be a litte human? Help a veteran broadcaster find another job? Offer him an opportunity elsewhere in the company, maybe even for less money? I'm sure many would take it and be grateful. No wonder so many people hate corporate America!
Its why I have always chosen to work for smaller "Mom and Pop" operations. Fire me if you must, but at least treat me like a human being after I've busted my ass to do a good job for you!
