Clear Channel Wheel of Misfortune

Radio & Records Tuesday reported that Clear Channel cut 590 employees nationwide. Several cuts were made in Albany, including Tim Noble, PD/MD of alternative WHRL (Channel 103-1). At top 40 WKKF (102.3 Kiss FM), APD/MD/night jock Corey Kincaid and afternoon driver DJ Thomas are out. Classic rock WPYX says goodbye to midday goddess Suzanne and night jock Vinnie. How will these cuts impact the stations and their performance? Middays and night appear to be the expendable airshifts these days whenever staff cuts are made.

Wow, just wow...All great talents. I either knew or have met all of these people and this shocks me. All with great shows and all dedicated to their jobs. They will land somewhere...ABC should pick these talents up..At least Fly should snap up DJ Thomas..The Edge for at least 1 or 2 of these peeps...

I just read this - Front page of radio-info.

So far, nearly 2,500 Clear Channel jobs have been purged in the last 100 days. In New York, most of Albany’s WPYX-FM (106.5) on-air staff received pink slips, including Bob Wolf (mornings), Suzanne (midday), Uncle Vito (afternoons) & Vinnie at night. WHRL-FM (103.1) PD Tim Noble is out, and WKKF-FM (102.3) APD/evening DJ Corey Kincaid was cut loose.

I don't see any indication that PYX has eliminated ALL local dayparts, like Wolf and Vito.

Check your sources. They are likely incorrect, at least for now.

FMQB issued a correction on the erroneous report that the full airstaff had been let go.

It's too bad about DJ Thomas. She's a good worker.

I just read it here on the front page of radio-info...The link that is..Msut be wrong, I heard Vito this pm.

PYX has apparently eliminated all live dayparts except for mornings and afternoons. So..all that remains is Vito, Wolf and various members of the Wolf morning show tracking other shifts. HRL is now a one man operation....All Keller...All the time...

I heard Dr. John Cooper on yesterday. He didn't sound like he wanted to be there at all. I don't listen much anyways..Ok, who's next??

Keller, yeah I like his style.

John Clark (PYX overnights) has been kept on, I'm sure. CC needs at least one body in the building overnight.

CC Mid-days and evenings have been frequently voice-tracked for YEARS now.
Anytime you hear Cooper these days, you KNOW it's VT.

John Clark is gone too. God bless all of them. they join Tad. say it aint so Tad. say it aint so.

Hmmm... it may be time to sell off WHRL and put on a simulcast of WEQX. Just a thought...

CC has tweaked WHRL so that they can run their generic national active rock format on it with out of the market generic DJs. The out of market DJs have already started and HRL is suddenly spinning Led Zeppelin, AC/DC,
Guns N Roses, Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix among others. However, the station sounds souless compared to its competitors WQBK and WZMR, and will probably hurt the heavily voice tracked WPYX as well...

It’s a death spiral. Soon there will be nothing left at 1203 TSR. CC can’t make its debt payments and pretty soon the creditors will be picking the bones off the carcass. Ah poor Coop. He sounds unhappy? Poor guy just followed orders just like the rest of CC’s unspectacular managers. They got where they are by knifing someone else. You sow what you reap dudes! CC has implement “news hubs” where operations like ‘Cincy’ are supplying product for markets like BOSTON and so on and so on. The loyal listeners who are left won’t buy this ploy. Even the most ardent will be tuning out in droves - couldn’t happen to a better group of jackals. Pretty soon they won’t be able to justify the rent and who’s ever left will be performing a zillion jobs out of their rat infested garage on WTRY Rd. Even the 50K blow torch was forced to throw a virgin on the pyre. Newsman Greg Fry was sacrificed in this latest purge; and then there were 7. NY Times article last week wondering if CC will make it to year’s end. The elite may end up hoping they get cut before the end of summer and the end of the severance codicil CC was forced to implement to get the deal done last July. Looks like Wee Willie may wind up in the very place he laughingly relegated the rest of us “losers” to after the January 20th cut - the burger joint. Can you supersize that Mr. Ohio? Didn’t think so.

He's gone too??? I think that he was there longer than anyone. I used to hear him doing evenings back when I first started listening to PYX around 1985.

To answer your question, John Clark had a brief stint at WPYX around 1984-1985. He then returned to WPYX (after some time on WQBK-FM and WXLE, among others) in September 1996 as P/T overnights, and full-time overnights in January 1997. None of the other full-time staff at WPYX had been there that long.

John Clark was at WPYX from 1984 until the end of 1986, doing evenings. After that he did a brief stint at WEQX and than went to WQBK-FM in 1987, to do overnights, remaining there until 1995. After that WXLE overnights for a year, returning to WPYX to do overnights in 1996....

Either you know him very well or...You're him! Welcome to the chat!

you're probably right - and what happens to all these properties nationwide when CC goes in to bankruptcy? CC won't even be able to give severance packages at that point.

Their local facility is a 7 station multi-million dollar compound that is only about four years old. I understand that it even contains a performance studio. I hear that it is a ghost town at this point. Severance packages, at least worthwhile ones
are probably out the door after July 31, of this year anyway. CC had an agreement with the SEC to provide enhanced
severance packages when they were taken over by investment banks last year...That agreement is in effect until 7/31.
If bankruptcy happens...all bets are off...
