Clear Channel owns 3 stations/markets I once managed (in Texas, Ohio & Florida), so I get a variety of feedback. Generally, a little more controlling than the groups of old, with tight operating budgets and challenging sales budgets. But obviously--their performance record is public knowledge--they know what they're doing. And success creates a positive environment wherever you are. This recent rash of downsizing has given CC an even more negative image than their well-earned (negative) reputation as The Behemoth. Nobody likes the big, bad giant--unless they're part of it.
In Florida, Paxson acted as an acquisitions agent for Clear Channel, gathering up a bunch of stations (40? 50?) to fold into CC when the timing was right. Used to be called "trafficking." And in many cases, like Panama City, they simply bought already-dominant stations. Clear Channel didn't build WPAP & WFSY into the dominant players they are. That happened long before anyone from CC or Paxson every stepped through the front door. All CC has really done there is say "keep doing what you've been doing." Not even much tweaking, really. They've sounded the same for a long, long time.
My own memory is too fuzzy. Maybe Charlie can tell us who actually created PAP & Sunny and built them into the big guns they are.
The Great Downsizing of '06 does sadden me. No real reason for it except to shine up cash flow for the big sale. Pensacola's GM Jeannie Hufford did a nice job for them for 10 years; hope they rewarded her appropriately.
