Clear Channel

I was shocked to see WLW and KRC's numbers in the latest PPM's.

Where did those listeners go? Hubbard's country station?

I can barely hear WKRC due to the noise floor caused by Wi-Fi, CFL's, BPL, etc, and it seems to be getting worse. Knowing Clear Channel the way I do, the ground radials at the 'KRC transmitter site are probably rotting away.

They were new in 1975 (I was there)...oops, that's 36 years ago. Never mind...

The night sgnal is much weaker than it used to be so it probably is true that CC is cost cutting on transmitter maintenance. I caught them a few times running daytime power at night.

They try to make up for the signal problems they way all tin-eared engineers do...by turning up the processing to one of these settings: "Scorched Earth", "Hitler's Retreat" or "Sherman's March".

KRC may be the most distorted audio in America. And, I'm guessing, way illegal.

They are louder than WLW which is buried by IBUZ which they need to throw that equipment in the Ohio river :)
Make no mistake...I hate the IBUZ & would like to see it evaporate. That said, my new car has HD Radio and WLW not only has some of the muddiest analog audio but also some of the best HD AM audio. HD AM tends to have a harsh/swishy upper midrange/high end but WLW has a lot less of that. And the signal appears to stay in HD all around the 275 loop. If they could get this sound through an AM radio without occupying several channels to accomplish it, I might actually become a fan of the stuff. That's about as likely as a sunny & 70 degree Indiana winter.

You know, Cincinnati is the only market that i know of, where the operators just thumb their noses at the FCC Rule book.
Most everyone watches the Mod Monitor, really close.
To say that they are blowing through the 99% negative peak limit would be an understatement.
Funny thing is that most of todays solid state transmitters will let you hit 135 positive peak modulation or better and not make this kind of a fuss.
You cannot even find a company to do a monthly mod check, anymore. The big boy in the market doesn't want the evidence out there. Nor do they want anyone checking up on them and turning them in to the FCC.
Heck, i know of a market with a guy that was hitting 140. The commission took the evidence and did a full checkup on him. Big trouble.
So, what happens with the NRSC measurements? Does 55 get a warning so that they can turn it down? When you hit the numbers they are, there must be adjacent channel noise and splatter.

Are those issues more prevalent with the lower dial AM's?
I've seen good radials last for 40 plus years. Of course, they have to be in the ground to work.
It could be like the situation that WAS the case at 1160. Half of a ground system.

Don't you hate it when you "do the math" and you realize, damn, I'm old! Just remember, it's not age that makes you old, it's mileage! :)
