Cleveland Monthly Feb ARB

You know what a good job for Maria could be if she got replaced by Jim Rome or (insert talk show here)?

Morning sports at CC Cleveland.

With Mike Snyder almost sure to be the next full time "Voice of the Cavs", he's not gonna be around much to do the "Wills and Snyder" show.

So...

Rename the WTAM AM show "Info to Go with Bill Wills", bring Maria in to do 20/20 sports, and have her float around the CC FMs with local morning hosts (WMMS, WMJI, and WGAR) to do sports at various points per hour.

Sad that WMMS is no longer a rock station. I still think it could be. Nothing against Bo, solid programmer, but I think there's been some things missing. 92.3 has cannabalized MMS on the younger side a bit.. but I still think a mainstream rock format with the right talent is viable. WMMS under Tony Tilford, even post "stunt" did quite well. WMMS started to go south under Jim Trapp. I dunno... still think it could be a successful rock station. And, the Buzzard logo should be put back into play. I disagree that the "Buzzard" doesn't mean anything.

If you're going that route, why not just give the show a more appealable name, like, "Cleveland's Morning News"?

Hearing rumors of a new FM talker on 107.3.

Sounded far fetched. Anybody else hear it?

Not heard & not far fetched either. They gotta do something.

The successs of The Lake cements the fact that the AAA abortion they put on 107.3 is a failure.
Gufus and Gallant as radio stations!~ ;D From the live cuts with feedback to the station name fiasco they really demonstrated how inept the brainstrust really is.

Not surprised rumors are flying. FM talk, even with all syndicated talent, would be a vast improvement over what they do now, and many would consider this a viable option. This time they need to get some people who have done radio in the last century to help them. ~ ;)
Perhaps they should ask around and see what people would like to listen to! ~ ;D

I have not heard the FM Talk rumors, but with so much uncleared TRN product in Cleveland, Phil Boyce could well be camped out in Elyria selling ELB hard on it. And of course, WEOL already runs some of it (Laura Ingraham, etc.).

Haven't heard the rumor, though.

107.3 started out as WEOL-FM when it first signed on.

A modern day WEOL-FM with Jeff Thomas in the morning, Laura Ingraham, Clark Howard, and Sean Hannity?

And maybe GKB doing an LMA from 6p-6a (like they did in Milwaukee a few years back).

KNR2 - 1540 days/107.3 nights?

Before anyone go further with any speculations on 107.3, please keep this in mind. WEOL has had their staff gutted beyond the point of no return.

Jeff Thomas is a part-time announcer (and so was Les Sekely; which is why he left WEOL to take a full-time teaching job). Their lone remaining newscaster, Craig Adams (who prior to 2009 was also the OM) is part-time, and most of his newscast content is referenced directly from the Elyria Chronicle or from Jeff's prior interviews.

The sales department is full-time because nearly all of them double in the sports department. Tim Alcorn is both the sports director and sales manager. It's fitting because their sports PBP lineup is what gets the biggest ratings.

Why is this?

Well, WEOL has had to rely on the revenue from 107.3 and their two sister newspapers - the Elyria Chronicle and Medina Gazette. 107.3's been hurting in revenue since late 2008, coincidentally after longtime PD Bernie Kimball was fired. Their decline was such that, prior to flipping to V, 107.3 was being out-billed by THEIR SISTER STATIONS IN SANDUSKY. Meanwhile, the Chronicle has to battle the Lorain Journal for readership and revenue in an economically devastated region in Lorain County. It would be tough for one paper to survive in an area like this. TWO PAPERS is nearly impossible- and mind you, the Journal's parent company emerged from bankruptcy last year.

By this alone, I can't see WEOL going to FM on 107.3. It would be a colossal wast of a signal simply because they won't put any money into the news/talk format and hasn't since 2003. Even if it's a full-blown relay of the TRN lineup, the ratings would be so disastrously low that V's numbers would look like a million bucks. TRN's lineup - aside from Laura Ingraham and Savage - cannot compare to WTAM in any way. Maybe if they did transplant Sean onto 107.3, they could have a chance... but I'm not that confident it will.

BTW, a nighttime LMA for KNR2 would be utterly ridiculous. KNR2 can't get out beyond Rocky River at it's peak. It's a rumor in Avon and virtually impossible to pick up in any other part of the county. And the nighttime signal would be on one of the better rimshot signals with 2000% better coverage?

Better Craig just buy the signal outright and move WKNR there as "SportsRadio 107.3" - and take 850 into an all-network "ESPN 850." KNR2 could then be handed back to Dale Edwards or turned off entirely - or make it an all-Gregorian chants station. (Yes, I don't think Craig could even afford such a deal IMO.)

It would be an interesting possibility. However, if Mike Snyder does relinquish the morning show role and/or the sports director title (for sanities' sake?) I'd be shocked if other people - namely WEOL morning host Jeff Thomas, WEOL sports director Tim Alcorn, WHBC sports director Sam Bourquin or WOBL/WDLW sports director Brian Deitz - DIDN'T vie for the job(s).

Maria might be good to held bolster the "Weekend Sportsline" roster, especially to help give Nick Camino and Andre Knott a break when needed.

Craig can't buy lunch. ( imo~ ;D ) Mel's not going to be buying his kid anymore stations in Cleveland. He's too busy fighting class action lawsuits against his satellite company for rasing subscription rates 30%.~ ;)

Would seem to me that there is plenty of knowledgeable local sports announcing talent "on the beach" that CC will get, and probably currently have, a ton of resumes from folks who want to be Snyder's heir apparent. But being CC, they will go the route of cheap.

Who says he will be replaced? In this CC world losing a salary is GOOD news! Lose one emplyee, assign his work to someone else! Thats what they do.

More than likey, Andre Knott will be next in line to take over for Mike Snyder, who is next in line to take over for Joe Tait.

I'd like to see Bob Frantz take over mornings and Knott take over evenings so we can have a nightly sports show on a station that people can actually hear, but Frantz is more likely to take over for Triv.

Heck, Snyder probably will still remain with the morning show for all we know.

For those who don't remember, Joe Tait once did the morning sports on 3WE - in addition to being the PBP voice for the Indians and Cavs. And that was before ISDN lines and digital recording was even thought of.
